F70 and jumping ID numbers

I am eighty and tend to go to beaches because there I do not have to get down on my knees. Getting up and down is very hard for me, but I also like to use my F70 on solid ground.

Before I get down on my knees, I look for solid repeatable signals and the target ID numbers do not jump more than two or three each way. Large number jumps always seem to be junk.

How far do you let your numbers jump before you will not bother digging? Again, getting up and down is a real problem for me.

Thank you. I love this forum.

I use the F70's twin, the Patriot. I had a penny yesterday jumping from 50-70. I wouldn't have dug it a few months ago, but after reading some tips on these forums, I started digging more. When I started, I used to rely solely on the numbers and the confidence meter, now I try to trust my ears a little more. I do dig a little more trash now, but I don't want to miss any coins. The deeper the target the more the numbers will jump. If you don't prefer to dig a lot of trash, the 2-3 number range should be good. I'd even go as far as five or six. Sometimes with multiple coins or trash in the whole with a good target, it can be a little erratic. I've only had my patriot for a few months, but I've been hitting it hard since I got it and learning a lot.

You are right about more depth making the numbers jump around. I guess I should just stay with solid hits.

I run the F75 and I don't pay any attention to the amount of spread. What I look for is good number to show, so if I see several good 72's or some 80's flash up there then my chances of it being a good coin target go way up.

So I would suggest just watch for good numbers and forget the spread.

Also your meter will not go as deep as your audio.

You take care and keep hunting,

Ron in WV

I agree with Ron. Stable numbers are always nice but more often than not especially in trashy areas, other targets might partially mask the good one. You might see the hint of a high conductor number now and then and get more lower range numbers that jump. Oftentimes this can mean a good target "lost" in trash (nails, foil, slaw, whatever).

....you have to take more chances with signals that are erratic There are many factors that change change the i.d., in sweeps, or have them average different than the norm.
Example: quarters at average depth here on an F-75 for me read 84; got an 89 one day but dug it, another quarter, Why the difference-many variables; but as Ron stated, it was solid (dig.)
But the solidness of numbers can be a little relative (more spread) depending on mode; go to stat mode and the depth is almost not to be believed-but the numbers (can) jump a lot.
But holding it still above the target, or really shortening the sweeps once you isolate the target works wonders.
It comes down to knowing the unit and what to look for. (I think there is some 'Shadow' in that F-75 stat mode!)
(don't forget that when depth reaches a certain point, i.d. numbers tend to rise, such as nickles reading as tabs--
--until you reach the point that things start to i.d. as iron)

Aaaaaabsolutely. It's to the point that I'm tempted to remove the 9v battery powering the screen and make my F5 a 'beep and dig' unit. I glean so, so much more information from my ears than I do the screen.
