F70 gets a Nitro Ring... :yikes:

Well today was it, the last detecting day of 2008. I wound it up with a hunt at the local high school. I've been hammering it since Saturday, to add to my 2008 final coin count. I swore I wouldn't go anywhere else until 2009 got here.

The F70 performed well, a very different beast than before. In case you've forgotten, I got the F70 recently and, while I liked it for a lot of reasons, I knew something was wrong with it. In a word, it was very erratic. It was way too susceptible to electrical interference and would go nuts for no apparent reason. I was also having trouble gettin' it to ground balance.

At the recommendation of Mike Hibbs (digginbullets), I called Mike Scott, Fisher/First Texas Service Manager. I have been in cahoots with Mike Scott since then, about 3 weeks now. I gotta say, he takes a great interest in making things right with "his" equipment. He has worked closely with me and has bent over backwards to get my F70 working right.

Thanks to him and his commitment to customer service, his involvement has helped me get it quieted down. I now seem to have control over it.

So, with a smooth running F70 I went to it. I "ground grabbed," set up my grids and swung that sweet coil hot for the next 2 hours. In that time, I managed to snag the usual coins and trash, the stuff you'd expect to see at a high school. Here's a pic of the nasty stuff, the junk no one likes to talk about:

And here is the "money shot," as they say:

That big, 'ol men's high school ring in the back was a real nitro moment. I saw it as it came out of the dirt and shouted,

"Oh, yeah, baby! I knew it was here, somewhere. It's about $*%&#@* time!!"
(.... hey I'm allowed a few choice words - I dug a lot of trash for that ring! :) )

Then I got a good look at. It wasn't as shiny and nice as it should be. What gives with that? The dirt was crusted up on it and it was well, dull. It didn't look like good metal should.
That's when realized it was a FAKE!

Well, I'll be ding-danged! Son of %*@$&!"
(.... hey I'm allowed a few more choice words - I dug a lot of trash for that junky ring! :) )

In the end, I got the nitro ring, a silver stud and the other doodads you see.
I also snagged a nifty little mis-strike cent. You don't find too many of those, and certainly not while detecting. All in all, pretty good times.

Great find with the mis-struck penny.

I like your Trashy Nasties pile. I save the tabs to give to the school. They get funds for after school clubs by turning the tabs in. I also keep a box of copper, brass and lead that about once a year goes to the local metal recycler. Last year's proceeds on those was $110. This year's box is smaller (not as many trips to the beach means a lot fewer sinkers) and right now prices are down some so I'll wait until well into the year to make the recycle run.

Nice hunt. Glad you got the beast tamed.

In the since of enough chose misses gives better odds of a hit on a good ring.

I'm glad things are working out. I think you are going to have a great year of MD'ing ahead of you.

Im saving all the trash this year, too, tvr. I'm interested tosee how it adds up at the end of the year.

I certainly hope so, John. I certainly hope so.

If those kids are like these kids they've got rings on every fingers and toes too

I think there are laws against trick class rings

So far in 4 days at the high school, I've gotten 3 rings. If the Law of Averages remains universal, I should run up on a good'un there before too long.

Speaking of laws, Mike, if there isn't a law against fake high school class rings - there should be!!
As a little exercise, I did a bit of figgerin.

The average mens high school ring weighs 21 grams and is 10K gold. 10K assay is 41.66% pure gold by weight.
21 gr (.4166) = 8.75 gr's of pure gold in the average mens high school ring.

A troy ounce of gold is 31.10 grams, so at current spot price of $880/ tr. oz., $880 / 31.10 = $28.38 per gram.

So what's that average 21 gr., 10K mens ring, with it's 8.75 gr.'s of gold worth? $28.38 (8.75) = $248.38!
If it was 14K, it would be worth $347.65 :yikes:

Pretty obvious why I had a nitro moment.
