Today I took my brand new shiny F70 to a local park that gets hunted pretty regularly and spent about 3-1/2 hours swinging and probing. The good - 28 coins and a token - (5) clad quarters, (7) clad dimes, (16) pennies (6 wheatbacks). The bad - I never knew there was sooooooo much non-ferrous junk there. Configuration - 11" DD coil, factory discrimination settings (notched out foil) - had to drop sensitivity to 40 to maintain sanity. I know I passed up good targets when they could not be repeated, or were masked or overpowered by adjacent junk. The machine is deep, wide beast and would be a joy in a clean location. Every 4th or 5th sweep had multiple low pitched bleeps with a high pitch sometimes randomly popping up - usually hard to repeat or get a response when sweeping 180 degrees to first sweep. It seems the size and coverage of the DD just picks up too much! Took a while to learn to pinpoint - most targets were 3-4 inches deep and I had to raise up off the ground to really pinpoint since it would initially pick up with the edges of the coil (or get sidetracked by adjacent junk). If it weren't for my prior detector experience, I would have probably packed up and waited for warmer weather.
Looking for advice for settings or coil preferences when such conditions present themselves. It has been my experience that where there are wheatbacks there is silver. I also know I am notching out small gold rings - which is what we all hope to find.
Thanks in advance - should have time to read and study since we are getting more snow Sunday PM.
