F70 maiden voyage - much to learn

Fantax

New member
Today I took my brand new shiny F70 to a local park that gets hunted pretty regularly and spent about 3-1/2 hours swinging and probing. The good - 28 coins and a token - (5) clad quarters, (7) clad dimes, (16) pennies (6 wheatbacks). The bad - I never knew there was sooooooo much non-ferrous junk there. Configuration - 11" DD coil, factory discrimination settings (notched out foil) - had to drop sensitivity to 40 to maintain sanity. I know I passed up good targets when they could not be repeated, or were masked or overpowered by adjacent junk. The machine is deep, wide beast and would be a joy in a clean location. Every 4th or 5th sweep had multiple low pitched bleeps with a high pitch sometimes randomly popping up - usually hard to repeat or get a response when sweeping 180 degrees to first sweep. It seems the size and coverage of the DD just picks up too much! Took a while to learn to pinpoint - most targets were 3-4 inches deep and I had to raise up off the ground to really pinpoint since it would initially pick up with the edges of the coil (or get sidetracked by adjacent junk). If it weren't for my prior detector experience, I would have probably packed up and waited for warmer weather.
Looking for advice for settings or coil preferences when such conditions present themselves. It has been my experience that where there are wheatbacks there is silver. I also know I am notching out small gold rings - which is what we all hope to find.

Thanks in advance - should have time to read and study since we are getting more snow Sunday PM.

I'm interested in tips also. I have an F70 that I haven't used yet... been using my F75 the few times that I've been able to go MD.

you did good for your first time sounds like you could use a smaller coil i seen a 5 inch coil in the classified section on this site for $75 wich is a great deal so it might be gone. sounds like you where doing everything right the 11 inch dd coil will pick the good stuff out of the trash when you hear a high tone mixed with all the trash noise try using smaller sweeps to find the target you can also raise the disc up to 20 witch will help a little without risking losing small gold rings, also stick to de mode sl mode does not work well in trashy areas, you will do ok just takes a few trips to learn it hh

Yeah you did real good! :clapping: I have this one park that's built with foundry sand and slag from the steel mill...the place gets a lot of traffic, the have music festivals with beer tents and all that quite a bit. deep grass with a clay base.. I set up the F70 with 11"dd and go 1 disc,-3thresh, 53 sens, DE mode, and DP tones. you can hover the coil 4" above the ground and work your way through the multiple scrap and screams and do pretty well, I only have that 11"dd coil, so I have to make it work for me if I can...most other detectorists will not even attempt this park because of the slag, foil, pulltabs and crowncaps...but the fellers here know I get a lot of loot out of it including two big silver rings. depth about 3" you cant even ground balance at this place...so I don't bother, and everything seems to work very well. Good Luck and again, that's good work for your first time out, and a good post about what a powerhouse and racehorse the F70 is...
