F75 back light

project01

New member
Hi everybody!

I'm new here so just would like to say "Welcome" and I hope that's the right place to ask...

How do you feel about always on back light? Is it really bright at pitch black? I've been thinking about night metal detecting, I even thought about metal detecting with the night vision goggles (don't laugh, my only free time is usually after midnight ;)) but then back light would ruin everything. Is it possible somehow to switch it off? Probably some modification is possible (and say goodbye to warranty) or some kind of window tint cover...

I would be more than happy if you could post photos taken at night time just to show how the display looks.

It looks like Fisher F75 is one of the best metal detectors and it would be shame if I'd have to choose different brand, I thought about X-terra 705 as it have on/off back light switch, but I really like F75 (and it have lovely shape on top of spec ;)

Thanks for any suggestions!

Regards

NO, it cannot be turned off. According to the owners manual, which I just read in it's entirety last night, it is a very low power LED that has minimal drain on the batteries.

I have hunted well into dark so many times, I consider it IMPORTANT to have a backlit screen.

I've been looking at the F75's, haven't bought anything yet, so I can't tell you how well it is backlit. I would assume it is more than adequate for the job though.

When intentionally hunting at night I take along a small flashlight to help with looking into holes and so forth. And be aware of your surroundings when hunting.

Thanks, yeah, it can't be turned off. I'm not worried about batteries, it's just the fct you can't turn it off that annoys me, when using night vision goggles it may be not possible to look at the display as it will blind you. I would rather take F75 apart and deactivate LED's ;) Hope it's not complicated

Anyone of you opened it?

Thanks

Sorry for my english

Why the night vision goggles? Never felt the need to use something like that when hunting at night. I have used an LED headlamp on a couple occasions that worked great. Don't know that you would be able to read the screen with NO LED using NVG's,

If you feel like you MUST use the NVG's, why not use the rain cover to hold a piece dark film over the screen to desired light level.

Seems like you are begging for trouble getting into the guts and trying to disable the LED. I would imagine the LED is board mounted behind the display.

The back light is a soft, subtile light that the screen numbers can easily be seen from a few feet away, but not so bright to be seen from much of a distance. I like it. HH jim tn

I hunt at night most of the time, and the light has never been a problem. I use the rain and dust cover and that makes the light even less conspicuous.

The night vision goggles is an interesting concept as they would keep you totally inconspicous. I have never worn or used night vision goggles. Has anybody ever detected using them?

Thanks for all your replies, it's good to know that back light is subtle and not too bright, however I could always put some kind of dark film over the screen as Rich suggested. Anyway, is there anybody who could shoot photos for me with F75 in dark conditions please? Seeing is believing ;)

Thank you all guys!

It's no more than the backlit display like you get on a depth-sounder or knotmeter on a sailboat. Not enough to spoil your own night vision. It will not dazzle a night-vision goggle.

If you can afford the night-vision goggles then you can probably buy two F75s and drill the LED out in one of them.

Why the goggles? Usually easier to just ask permission. ;-)

Ok, thanks

It's not about permission really, but because I would detect mostly after dusk I think that's the only solution in the rural area, I might as well use LED torch but don't like the idea to be visible like on the plate, for different reasons. I don't have the NVG so don't know, my thought was just that it would be more comfortable way of metal detecting after dusk than with the torch.

Thanks

Actually hunting in the pitch black night the display is quite blinding, and very distracting. Hunting around someplace that has some ambient light is a totally different experience, and it's fine, but it feels like a spot light in a place with NO ambient light whatsoever.

I for one would be very happy to be able to disable the night light. I'm not sure why some of the ten year old Fishers have this ability but not their "latest & greatest" ? Let US, the BUYER decide if we want the light on or not, minimal battery drain or not, it should be our decision IMHO.

Thanks Cal_Cobra for this opinion, so we have two different opinions now. Maybe some people have brighter displays than the others, hm? That's what I meant - pitch black and if it's blinding it's not for me, unless I would use some kind of dark screen film

I agree it should be OUR decision to choose whether or not you want the light on/off, just imagine car in which you can't turn off the lights ;)

I doubt any of the displays are brighter then others, it uses surface mount LEDs, and their essentially identical components. I've hunted intercity parks at night (because it's dark at 5pm and I'm not ready to pack up and go home yet) and the display was fine as there's ambient light which diffuses the display intensity. I've also hunted in isolated areas where there's no ambient light, and the display was so powerful that you really had a hard time seeing your surrounding environment, whereas with the machine off it was fine (via moonlight). You really feel like your in a spotlight in this environment. I'm tempted to crack open my LTD to determine how easy it would be to incorporate an LED switch, but I don't want to void the 5yr warranty. I'll probably fabricate a flip-up cover over the display, or a red filter to help mitigate the brightness when it's unwanted. There's plenty of people who hunt at night (and not for illegal reasons), it's great fun, albeit a different experience.

I find that the light is too bright for me too, i do a lot of beach hunting in summer after the crowds have left and before the beach cleaner machines take the goodies, i would prefer to be able to turn it off also, or at least dimm it

When we were kids we would hunt for night crawlers with a flashlight with a sock on it
so we could sneak up on them:ninja:

Or buy a T2 said to be about equeal to the F75
