I agree the Sunray is just one of several pin-pointers that can be used, and I don't know for sure but I would venture to say there is still a lot of people out there that don't use a separate pin-pointer. I have been having some trouble pin pointing with the 11" DD coil but with the little 5" coil you can't be to far off with that little hockey puck.

Personally and it is a personal preferance; I like a pin pointer; I use a vibra probe and like it but I went to a metal detector store the past week and looked at the new models of pin pointers out and the garrett is also impressive as well as others. The sunray has always been good on our minelab machines but we went fisher this time for weight and speed as well as low battery consumption and the sunray would work against those things I think; Just my pennys worth; Good luck

I am new to the sport, but I dont hunt without my garret pro pointer, and I have no probs pinpointing with the 11 inch, there is a round molded dot on the coil just in front of where the rod connects to the coil, most all the time my target is right under that dot, hope this helps!! and like grumpy stated just my opinion....hh rick in mi.

I use a pin pointer only because I have a hard time pinpointing with the Fisher 75.......Sometime I can pop'em right out of the ground but still love my handheld pointer........I know someone that has an e-trac and he can pop a coin out so good that you can hardly see the hole.....:)......Maybe I'll get that good one day.....

As far as the type..............its a matter of personal preference. The Garrett Propointer seems to be the pinacle of performance in a handheld right now. Its a VERY popular pinpointer.
I HAD a sunray probe for my &5 for some time............but it was "problematic". For some reason it introduced noise into the machine, even when off. Sent it back to see if it had a problem.............but it did the same thing after I got it back. Worst money I ever spent on an accessory. Maybe mine had a singular problem that none of the othes have. dont know.............but I'll never buy another.
I DO have a pro-pointer but rarely use it. I find the f75/575LTD pinpoints very very well. Still , its nice to have the propointer on me from time to time, as we all have a difficult target every now and then. In a nutshell..................NO....................a poinpoint isnt NEEDED.......but it is handy from time to time.

I have to agree with you NE Digger, but one thing I do know abought my ltd is it dont like objects close to the surface it goes nuts when coins or what ever are real close,so i use my pro pointer to check it out and normally i dont even have to dig, just pop it out of the grass or loose dirt with my pointer. And yes when the pointer is off it will[cross talk] with the detector......hh rick in mi.

Different techniques for different people. I love the recovery. I love taking my time, relaxing and slowly recovering the target. I am one of the old guys who liked the blunt screwdriver probe to touch the coin before I dug it. When I moved to Fisher I gave up the probe, but trust me, I still know where mine is. The LTD is amazingly good at coins on edge and targets close to trash. I find the pinpointer very helpful for both of situations. A normal target and signal will be dead center under the coil nearly every time.

Now that said the SunRay does ID the target fairly well. So it's all in what you like really Oh and SunRay adds a bit of weight to the overall machine..

No... I have one for my Sovereign GT but I never use it, I always use my Pocket Uni-Probe... I use it with everything and have a Garrett for a backup.

i agree!..i have "considered" a pro-pointer in the past, however after more than 30 years of hunting,
decided i really don't need one!..my pin pointer has always been the detector, and never experienced any difficulty locating
targets,or digging them out.i realize that they CAN be helpful trying to locate the target on the 'side" of the hole,or some such,
but because i tend to be very careful when digging, and take my time,i seldom,if ever "damage" a coin.i also can see where guys would like 'em,and that's cool!

The reasons I always use the Pocket Uni-probe as my main pinpointer and the Garrett as my backup are two... and they are both important (especially if I am using a multi-frequency detector) the UP has a frequency adjustment and a gain control on it. It also helps with a sensitive detector like the F75... sdjust the frequency so that there is no talk between the pinpointer and the detector then adjust the gain so that you have a slight threshold sound on the pinpointer and it will hit at a good 4".... and the second reason is, and I really like this), it only signals directional... out from the tip of the wand. The Garrett signals from the tip and the sides making it harder to use in a hole with several targets... the depth of the UP makes the signalling from the tip work like a piece of art.

As far as any pinpointer talking with your detector... it is an easy problem to overcome even with no frequency adjustment... just flip the stereo/mono switch on your headphones while you use the pinpointer and you wont hear the detector chatter. You'll notice real quick if you forget to switch it back because all of a sudden you'll hear no chirping or beeping... but really, you won't forget if you make it part of your routine.

I only ever had a problem with no switching back to the detector when using the SR inline probe on a Sovereign because the Sovereign runs pretty quiet compared to an F75/T2 and it is easy to walk 10' befroe noticing... especially if you're in silent search mode... but that isn't a problem with an F75... you
ll know right away if the detector isn't giving audio, except maybe if you're in BP with the 5" coil... it is quiet. It is always best to get in a habit of swinging the coil over your boot or swinging your shovel over the coil if you flip the stereo/mono switch while pinpointing and recovering a target... then you'll have a double check.. but if I can remember to switch back... anyone can... laff.

They no longer make the Pocket Uni-Probe, I don't know why.. it is the best probe ever made but they still service them and used ones come up for sale from time to time. They may have some extra wands still.

A directional pinpointer with 4" of depth makes recovery FAST and easy.
