Fact is I could only get the unit to boot up correctly less than 25% of the time during that last day I had it, and I tried 20-30 times so they've just got to see the problem... at some time.
I usually turn the unit on in my basement then carry it outside. I'm wondering if the unit will not boot up properly if it initially sees metal under the coil. I don't remember ever trying to turn the unit on outdoors.
I can say for certain that my old 1st-gen F75 never had that issue.
Called Fisher again yesterday and they have decided to send me back a new unit (head only). Unfortunately, they were never able to repeat my problem so I agreed with Felix to call him after a few days to let him know how the new unit is performing. In retrospect, I should have taken a picture of the blank, lit display screen when the unit was in a dark room... oh well.
Both Felix and Sal (my Tech) were very professional in this incident.
