Fair Grounds

Hey guys, i was wondering if anyone has had any success with hunting old fairgrounds? I'm sure most have been pounded over the years but i have been able to obtain some info. about some dating as far back as mid 1700's and their locations, so i'm contemplating paying a few of them a visit with my Ex2. I'd like to hear your experiences whether bad or good.

You should search the posts from James ND for 2007 - he seemed to be yanking out silver every week at a fairgrounds in his neck-of-the-woods. Here's one:

well we have an old and i do mean OLD a$$ fair ground here but there has been so many demo derbies and other modern stuff goin on that when i tried to hunt it i remember thinkin to myself...(self ... exactly how many car parts and beer cans pop tabs and other numorous items does it take to find even a CLAD dime in this place?) well i figured if i spent 100 or so years in a 20 foot by 20 foot area i might get enough trash cleaned out to maybe get 4inches of depth then maybe if i actually tossed a clad dime into the area i could then find it....what im tryin to say is if an army of guys detecting it for years could clean it up a bit then yea ok i would do it but till then ...NO WAY am i wasting my time in it......besides that the midway has only about 4 inches of dirt then road pack under that to support the modern rides so even if you did get a deep sig ..no way to dig it.......good luck man....for me tho there are tons and tons of places to hunt that is less hassle

Glad someone remembered the success I have had at Fairgrounds and was able to get a Link to Steelhead. Thanks Much! I looked in at Noon, but didn't have time enough to reply to this. Fairgrounds can be a very rewarding site for them elusive Old Coins that most of us seek every time we go out Detecting. Normally, by existing Buildings, you will find out that there is a lot of Iron built up in these areas due to the years and years of Bottle Caps, Nails, and other Misc. Junk dropped by previous visitors. If you have a Small Coil, and Patience, this can be a very rewarding area at a Fairgrounds. There is lots of Junk that most people won't even hunt in due to too many signals but if you take the time and go Slow and Listen to the Targets in the Ground, and have some previous In-Field Knowledge of what the Explorer 2 is telling you, then you will be shocked at just how many Coins can be found in these Trash Laden Areas. Pretty much anywhere is good at a Fairgrounds for searching for Old Coins and other things of interest. The only hard spots to Detect are the areas that had Car Races which will yield Tons Of Iron and Junk Car Parts. This is sad in a way since most of these spots was where the Old Horse Track was, which was a very busy place for Spectators to drop Coins at. So, If you get out and track down some of those Old Fairgrounds, just remember that the Old Coins are there, it just takes some Patience and some Practice to start to get the results like I have had in the past. Anywhere can be good at a Fairgrounds, even in the Wide Open Spaces where people park their Cars. Also remember this! Where do 1,000's of People stand or even walk in a place like this? The answer is Everywhere! I hope you have some great success Steve(OR) when you try out some of those Old Fairgrounds you know of. I didn't do a fairground, but did an amusement park. Kinda the same thing. I did great!!!! Barber's, Mercury's and even a handful of Seated, including a 1859 Seated Half I showed on the Metal Detecting Forum a while back. Here's a trick for you. If your not getting anywhere and you are about to give up on that fairgrounds, do this before writing it off. Look over the area. Find the outskirts of the fairgrounds as you see it today. Then look past that for any available, not used land. The fairgrounds could have been much larger (including across the street and down a ways). These areas could be virgin territory. It happened to me. The amusement park was 60 acres. Reading an article on its history, it told me it was 400 acres originally! Wow, what a difference. As soon as I started venturing out to the wilderness, hilly area, I hit pockets of turn of the century picnic areas. It was heaven!! You may have the same results. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for the great info guys. I have a fair, haha, amount of experience with the Ex2 and i have hunted fairgrounds before with some mild success. However these two that i'm looking to hunt go back to the mid 1750's supposedly. I'm in the midst of trying to figure out if they are still in the exact location or if they have moved like so many others. Amusement parks i have often thought of as well as old drive in movies theaters. So many old places so little time. Will keep you posted. I have two other farm houses i gained permission to hunt over the last week so they might take priority. One goes back to the late 1800's and the other the late 1700's.

Again thanks for the words of encouragement and advice. I do have a small coil and don't mind weeding through the iron for some nice 1700-1800 coinage.

I've discovered a downtown park where the local kids must have penny wars, throwing them at each other.
Almost a handful an hour, and very little of anything else!
