I am still learning my Excal 1000. I have had success with it and have been pleased with how it tones when I have a good target beneath it. BUT,,, the last two times out with it. I am getting constant tones and especially on the reverse swing on each end of my sweep. I used to occasionally get that, but now it seems constant. I am beeping in the same waters, so I now it can't be that many new targets. It tones as if I'm sweep over a bed of nails, one right after another. I have tried numerous settings. I have best luck with Sens/auto, volume to my comfort, threshold/barely aud. I have tried the 11-12 o'clock routine with backing off a little at a time but have had no luck. Just lots of tones, driving me nuts. Any one know what I'm doing wrong??

Well, try this 11-12 Sensitivity, never Auto. Run in Disc. I have checked weak signals in Disc, that could not be heard in Pinpoint! Mine usually stays on 11. Turn Threshold to barely audible and then down to no longer audible. If the Threshold tone comes back over the headphones, then you may still be set too high. Investigate any signal you can get tone on and be sure to check it 360 degrees. Signal strength can increase at different angles. I assure you, that if you go over a non-ferrous target, you will get a read, unless it is too deep. Leave Discrimination on 1 and never move it, that is if you like gold! If this does not work, you have issues with the unit, more than likely. Send it to Vegas for a checkout. Are you wetsanding or water hunting? Are you hip mounted or stem mounted? Are you still in warranty? Lemme know. Send me a PM if you like for further counsil.

1)Check your coil cover and clean it
2)Do a voltage read on your battery to make sure it is over 12 volts.
3)Make sure that the winds of your coil wire are not loose and sloppy.
If these don't solve your problem. You need to call Las Vegas and ship it back. They are having some issues with this particular problem on the new units shipped out early this summer.
I feel sorry for the new users that don't know the difference between a good unit and a bad one. I got the feeling there are plenty of these out there with this problem.
Does it false in Auto also?

These are all good suggestions. I will try all of them. Yes, it does do it in Auto. That is where it all started. I usually end up going back to auto, because I never know what's going on with the machine out of auto. I hope to give it another attempt this weekend with these suggestions and a few others I have received. Thank you to all who have assisted me so far. Troop
Hey Everyone, I took all of your suggestions and I got out today to give it a try. It seems to be back to normal. I didn't have as many false signals. Still have them on the point of return on both left and right. This being when I come to end of swing and return in the opposite direction. Is that normal? I don't remember them being so obvious. At least I was able to pick out real signals. Only found three quarters and four pennies, but I only had an hour to play. Thanks again for those who gave me the advice. I will report more when I have more time to give it more testing. Troop

Troop if you're new to the excal find someone near you that knows the unit and have them try it. If it's a new unit, and the knowledgeable person says its not right don't waste anymore time....send it back.
My old faithful Excal had headphone problems so I bought a new Excal in July to take on vacation and it falsed right out of the box. I sent it back to Minelab and they didn't get it back to me in time for vacation, so the dealer sent me a new unit and now after less than a months use its doing the same thing......... falsing on every sweep.
I estimate I have a 1000 to 1200 hrs on excals and I know every trick.

Let us know how it works..I hunt sometimes too near the surf and expect that to happen w/my Quattro..Really need to break down and get an Excal, don't I?If unit is dunked in fresh water chances it will dry out and be good as new..Salt water is a different story as if any grains of salt entered the innards they will ruin the circuit board in time...in these cases unit should be taken apart and cleaned to remove same..Cleaning the exterior is not a fix and in time expect your unit to go down. Might want to call Minelab or your local dealer for further instructions as the unit can be a bear to take apart...
Remember do remove the batteries and don't turn it on until its completely dry and the innnards cleaned...I have actually heard of units being submersed in salt water being taken apart and rinsed with cold fresh water in these circumstances, however do call Minelab for expert help..Unfortunately salt water and electronics don't mix and thats why they make water machines with enclosed watertight cases..
By the way most warranties don't cover this situation and an XS wouldn't be under warranty anyway....
