Falsing...ice, snow, water

Is this just a normal problem with metal detectors?

For example, going from grass to snow or ice, I detect a signal. The signal often seems to disappear as the surface snow/ice recedes.

What about frozen ground? Am I getting possible false signals...simply because of unevenly frozen ground??

In other words....am I trying to detect too soon? Let the ground thaw out?

Proper GB and noise cancel? Clean under the coil cover? Hows your sensitivity set? I have had similar problems and this has almost always been the solution. otherwise I have been in a place that has been to hot with EMI.

Jeff

Oh Yeah probably not to cold. What kind of numbers do you get for the GB?

I can consistently get signals from grass to a snowbank or snowbank to grass. On the grass side..stable. On the snow side...stable. But the line always gives a signal of some kind. I'm just wondering...if it does it on the surface....could it do the same thing underground??

BTW the Bounty Hunter that I had for a VERY short time...did the same thing on the surface.

But to answer your question...I've been trying lots of things. I've let auto tracking do ground balance, manual ground balance, always auto noise cancel. I've generally been keeping the sensitivity low, 15-20, because I can't hardly dig anyway.(frozen ground)
OK....I don't think I've tried Prospecting mode on the grass/snow line. I'll try that tomorrow.

walking along just where the dry turns to wet and swinging over both at the same time. I would get a signal everytime the coil would go from dry to wet. Check your power setting, I was running at 28 on my xterra 70 so I started to decrease and when I got to 17 that signal went away. I think its like that old headlight high low beam thing. higher power reflects more off of the liquid and in your case snow and ice.
