FAST and DEEP...........and all this "I know everything stuff".....

The "fights" are what makes it interesting. People just have to understand different views and the posts debating the topic aren't really of a personal nature, just another opinion. If they were I would have already gone to Upstate NY to have it out with Charles.

One way would be to bury KNOWN TARGETS at KNOWN DEPTHS in my hunting site. VOILA a test garden in actual conditions in less than 10 minutes (if you have a shovel) Heck, you could even put in a few nails in there if you wanted to.
No where close to the same as hunting in undisturbed ground such as a park. I hunt both, disturbed being plowed fields, and undisturbed which has ground untouched for the last 200 years. (Along with some which can be anywhere in the middle) There is a MASSIVE difference in the way the Explorer reacts to a target which has developed a halo compared to one that has not. The only circumstance which I feel that test *may* be valid is for gold at the beach where the sand moves, and of course gold doesn't break down.
If I were to hunt disturbed ground 100% of the time and didn't have much iron to deal with the Explorer would not be my detector of choice.

Maybe his info was not the result of just a sterile environment? Maybe the Minelab professional spoke from actual field experience.
Yes, even if so, people who think otherwise should be able to post their experience. No?
I don't post much here much anymore anyway due to the rudeness factor so don't care one way or the other if your settings work better for you than what the rep says.
Tony, you made the most rude posts out of anyone here in the last month. Should I refresh your memory?nuff said.
But I think it was very typical of the tar and feathering that rep got who was only trying to be helpful. It spoke volumes of the childishness of some of the posters on here who replied to his helpful post in a na na na boo boo type attitude.
I don't see it that way. These posts make some of the best threads and guaranteed there are going to be some newer Explorer owners that really get something out of this. I think the "Muskyville" (other forum) pats on the back are great but come on dude. A forum debate is not an attack.
Just my half pence which is about all it's worth.
Happy Thanksgiving.
We should all be thankful that we have nice finds, right?
Tony
You posted it, so I answered. Nothing personal cuz I still think you rock Tony boy. A happy Thanksgiving to you also.

Chris:
One thing to keep in mind is that the test garden needs to be "seasoned". In fact, when you create a test garden, be sure to water the garden frequently for the first month or so just like you would a regular garden! It compacts the soil, and removes any air pockets. What you would like to end up with is close to what you would find while hunting. Another tip is to put the targets on a piece of broken tile. This stops the object from migrating deeper than what you originally measured.

all is well. we continue to exchange ideas. happy turkey day to you.
bing

Once a field is plowed I hunt it right away, than again once we have some rain and it compacts a bit more. There is an obvious difference as pottery is now visible, but still this is not the same as ground that has not been touched. As a matter of fact I was just hunting a field that leaves an unplowed buffer zone close to the water and the difference was VERY obvious. I hunted several hours with decent results in the disturbed ground but no question the depth and target response greatly improved once I started hunting the strip that was still unplowed. I don't think it takes forever for ground to get to this state, (I would guess the buffer zone has been plowed at some point) but it does take time.
I still believe you can not have controlled detecting environment which simulates real conditions. One posters thoughts will always vary from a little to alot because we, and everywhere we hunt, will always be different.

We celebrate Thanksgiving on a different date here, but I do hope you have a great one.

as for the rudeness factor - I hear glass breakin' man, and people in glass houses should refrain from throwing stones... or so they tell me.
I was making a very valid point based on my knowledge of MD'ing and experience with EX II. Perhaps results are random, and I'm nuts but i'm a happy nut then.
You'll note that I did not post under rep's post and simply stated my results which are 100% fact. people can draw their own conclusions.
Finally this is a user's forum and one with some very strong opinions. i don't have to agree with anyone and proved that back in spring with the Bob & Ed drill. You were part of the 'pile on' as I recall
but I didn't go out and buy a voodoo doll and put your name on it.
But i will state my truth when it comes to MD'ing and what i know to be true for me. Party on!
HH!

I think it was the great poet David Lee Roth who once said, "I wish they all could California girls"

Is that Norwegian sarcasm or humour? Either way it is seriously lacking.
Surely you can do better.
