Fast and Deep

Hi All,
I have used Explorers since they first came out.
But having read the Andy Sabisch mail dated the 5th November I have started to try fast and Deep together.
On the present land that we are detecting it works well and Iam getting nearly the same depth as using the Deep only choice with all the adavantages of being in fast mode.
I did not realise they could be use togther I had mistakenly always thought it had to be a choice of one or the other only.
Thanks Andy.

Glad that the information has helped you . . . . . even though I've got more hours on the Explorer's than I care to count, I still pick up tips and tricks when I meet other users. As a matter of fact, Joe DeMarco from NJ showed me a few recently in Las Vegas . . . . contrary to the old saying, "You CAN teach old dogs new tricks!"

I find that "fast" helps with separating targets in trashy ground and pinpointing as well as letting you swing a bit faster. The "deep" seems to act a bit like extra gain without the anoying chirping.
A lot of beach detectorists have always used clear screens with maximum sensitivity and fast and deep switched on to get maximum depth and sensitivity. Many land detectorists seem to have preferred customised settings.
I think that the message has now got through that unless you dig everything except the most obvious trash you will inevitably miss good targets.

Fred

I suspect that we are all still learning what the Explorers can do. It's been noticeable on both US and UK websites that the quality of the finds being posted is improving year on year. This year has probably been the best ever for gold and hammered silver coins in the UK!
I also value your tips and opinions greatly
Regards
Fred

Fast sets the recovery speed of threshold null discriminaiton. The quicker you reset the threshold the sooner another target can be accpeted and identified. This allows multiple targets that are hit in a single sweep to be detected properly. If recover is too slow then it is easy to pass over a co-located target. If too fast then you get a double hit on a single taget. However, fast can mask a deep target as it causes the threshold to recover so quick on a deep faint target that it can be missed. I only use FAST in very trashy areas. One advantage of manual sensitivity is the the coil can be moved at a slower rate of speed as is the case with FAST OFF.
The setup for heavy trash and clear gound for deep targets can be very different if one takes advantage of the settings intended for those conditions. The detector has a lot of setting but mostly they are for heavy trash metals and clear ground and ground with a lot of iron. If we check and area and find the primary type of soil and problem then the explorer has settings for each of the primary site conditons.
Deep is really not named that well as it is actually audio boost. Fair target have emphais placed on them so they sound louder. The difficult is that a fait shallow target or deep faint target are the same to the detector so both receive audio boost. Deep on will cause shallow targets to sound loud but can be only a small bit or piece of trash metal. This will in heavy trash cause what can be confused with false signals.
In areas where there is little trash we would expect the greatest depth if we have Deep ON, Fast OFF, and Audio sounds set to Audio 1 or one of the others. This in conjunciton with Audio Gain to 8-10 (Preamp gain) and sensitivity to about 28. This is where you really see the tremendous depth the Explorer can give us. Fast off and Semi-auto work in conjunction to help compensate for dramatic soil changes so they may both need to be on in really bad ground. I have found that auto noise cancel almost alwasys selects channel 5 but when I set this myself will often find a better channel. Auto noise cancel assumes in 30 seconds the environment can be monitored and a channel selected. I use manual and wait for about a minute or longer if I hear stray RF on each channel.
Anyhow for users that don't like all the tones it is Deep off that will cut back on them. Also Iron Mask to 0 to -10 will cut back on the number of tones. I find that discrimination patterns set to reject anyting below 0, Fast ON, Deep OFF, Semi-auto sensitivity set about 28 and Audio Gain to just about anywhere above 5 to be a very nice precious and allow detector.

Very good post Cody and I also use the same proceedure with the manual noise cancel... its a lot quicker than waiting 30 seconds.. and I too find that the explorer nearly always defaults to 5.
When it comes to using fast and deep at the same time I am personally against this setting as it is defeating the object of the filters. I think your post explains this very well.

Thanks you guys,
I think I will continue to use fast and deep for a while.
Having read all these mails.
So far Iam finding a well balanced sound and visual response and the finds from depth or surface are still coming.Jerry.

God Father or no God Father.
Check with a Minelab technician and see what explanation you get for these various filters.
I'm surtre they know more about it as they built the bloomin thing. Read Codys post again.... he explains it well.

No way in hell is a technician for every company is going to know more about how detectors react in real life situations than the REAL USERS who put in the time.
So you think Charles Garrett knows every last snap, crackel, and pop, about every last detector he built, and his general guidelines would apply to every person and detecting situation?
The problem is we have some people giving advice here who don't even put the time in on the darn things, or divide it amoung many detectors and think they know them all. YEAH RIGHT!

First of all I do put the time in... and I do know the Explorer plus I have never used any other detectors except the Explore, Excalibur and now the GP3000... of which the GP I know nothing about. I am not attacking anybody... at least Mike Moutray.
You dont even know me at all CC so who are you to judge???? And what makes you the sudden expert on the Explorer????
Regarding DeepSouths post..I am also not sure if Mike would do well over here in Europe as the same goes for me in the US. The situations and ground conditions are completly different and the machine has to be setup/programmed in a different way.
Its now 10.30pm here now in Norway and I will write my reasons in a detailed post tomorrow. As I state this is not a personal thing or me trying to out do Mike or Andy. I will give my reasoning soon.
I also say again that Cody gave a very good post on the fast and deep settings.
Bloomin/ Bummin.. is a bit of my dialect from Yorkshire/Cheshire.

Blooming is the more acceptable word instead of Bloody.
When I was a child if I said Bloody Hell I would get a clip round the ear.
But Blooming Hell was acceptable.
English is a funny old language.

Who said I was talking about you?

Again, I made no reference to your detctor skill but if you would like to get into it I seen your video and consider yourself VERY lucky you do not have to work sites for the last itty bitty signals, because you would be very lost. You say in the video "work slow" apparently that means to walk slow and not swing because you sure as heck don't swing slow.
PS and like Frank says, Big Mike over you and twice on Sunday.
PSS The only person in the video who seemed to have a handle on how to swing the Explorer was the American female. Hats off to her and I bet she may have a shot against Mike.
See ya.

Is that the best you can come up with??
No Brain... No Headache
Sorry if i missunderstood you on the postings.... I did think you were having a little pop shot at me.
I am sure MIke will come on soon and explain his settings.

That is more acceptable JBM.
The silence gets quite deafening when there is more of heated debate on here...

Gary it's kinda bothering me where you a STAR in the movie Exploring the Explorer( The guy on the front of the box with the funny hat and ear bob thingy is sopost to be teaching people how to use the Explorer but as you said you are against useing Fast on well over on this side of the pond just about every park play ground or where ever your hunting Except for an open field way way way off the beaten path has way to much trash for you or anyone else to use Fast off the signals fade and blend togeather where you can't hunt point made ... Frank Bunkley USA and by the way Gary have you seen CC,s Pis post on the coins and relics hes found well in my book he is the sudden Expert.

I am not against using FAST... I am talking about using FAST & DEEP at the same time...
Ok as promised a little bit more insight to the

That all may be true where your at Gary BUT back in the 60,s and 70,s there was a boom of guys finding everything BUT not all, there fore for me and a lot of others we must go to the trashy areas and Iron infested areas where the other guys left alone . Now there are areas where there insn't any modern trash as in a Civil War battle area,s where I went today I was hunting with fast and deep ON then I remembered this debate so I turned fast off then yes the signal did get bigger but it was harder to pinpoint and the signals were different sounding so I switched back and forth between the two and both would pick up the signals even at 11 inches on a small square nail so why would I change? Deep and Fast is the way a lot of people hunt because the places that we have to hunt are trashy so why ask why Drink Bud Dry!!!!

Where I go detecting in Norway there are lots of trash. I too go mostly for coins as Norwegian silver coins are also very valuable as Norway didn
