Fast grab or manually GB ??

New member
[bI was wondering if most set their FT detectors like I've always set my other detectors? I've always set mine a little positive when I balanced my detectors. Does this seem to be the best way to set up this newer line of detectors? How many use the fast grab feature? I like the idea of being able to push the trigger and activate the feature too. I was just wondering how everyone sets theirs manually. Slightly positive? or set for no change in tone? [/b]

Often the all bold posts are a bit tiring for me to read. I'm not alone, either, so this was much more 'pleasant.' :)

For me it has been a bit dependant upon the particular make and model that I was manually Ground Balancing. A modified White's IDX Pro needed to be set just very slightly positive in the All Metal mode. Many Tesoro's models I would "power balance" in the motion Discriminate mode as that was what I searched it. Due to the very mineralized ground I usually find myself it, the result was a somewhat negative GB in the All Metal mode. That was good because a too positive GB in All Metal could have resulted in a much too positive GB in the Disc. mode and cause the loss of (no detection response to) large high-conductive coils like silver dollars and silver halves. So, it made a difference what I was using, and if I was hunting in the motion Discriminate mode or the All Metal mode.

So, with my T2 and Omega and Gamma I prefer to follow the Owner's Manual suggestion of letting the Fast Grab (T2) or Ground Grab (Omega & Gamma) set a 'functional' G.C. Phase setting for most applications. The computerized circuitry does a fine job and seldom, if ever, have I experienced a problems because the GB was way off.

The Owner's Manuals do suggest that you let the computerized circuitry set the G.C. for general hunting, but you would want to manually adjust it if you were nugget hunting (mineralized ground looking for small gold nuggets), searching a salt water beach, or some other applications, mainly when using the All Metal mode. In those applications i try to set my unit close to "spot on" as possible, and if anything just very slightly positive as I lower the search coil from about 6" down to about

Since getting my first FT detector, the F 75, then a T 2, F 75 LTD and the Omega, I have always used fast grab for ground balancing. It works great and is quick. About the only time I manual gb is when hunting over wet sand at the beach. HH jim tn

fast Grab works just fine.UNLESS..you can not find a clean spot to GB.. If in a park with tons of small trash leave it at factory preset for hunting.It's more than adequate with that setting (90)..That's in discrimination mode..NOT ALL METAL MODE.

Note: fast grab is more likely than not to be dead on with the T2........... Read Montes post about the tracking factor and Fast Grab ..In fast grab your just getting exact GB of the ground that is under the coil.......... I want to again stress it's only accurate 100% if nothing is in the ground(Target) that the machine will GB to.

I almost always use FG but sometimes, on a whim usually, I switch to AM and FG then turn it slightly positive... just remember that one number of GB on the T2/F75 equals 5 settings. The ground balance numbers go from 0-99 but there are 500 different settings in those 100 numbers so setting slightly positive may not mean raising the GB a few numbers but probably one at the most... but a slightly positive GB may mean the actual number remains the same, especially if the FastGrab sets the number at the bottom of that number's 5 indent range.

Page 13 of the T2 manual:

The range of ground cancellation settings indicated on the display range from 0 to 99;
however, each displayed number spans 5 detent steps on the settings knob. The actual
internal ground cancellation setting changes with each step; there are a total of 500 different
settings. Under some ground conditions you may be able to hear the individual steps in the
setting.
