Feels good!

I made it out 5 times in February. Before this year I had never hunted in New York in February so that's good. It has been pretty cold and snowy too but two mini thaws helped me out. I have fully developed metal detectors thumb of about level 9. Metal detetors thumb is when the tip of your thumb becomes cracked and raw especially at the corners of the nail. It stopped bleeding while I took a nap so that's a bonus. Back to winter tomorrow. Last year I found my 1000th coin on 4/6. Should beat that by a week or more with good weather in 2009. My first ever MD goal was to find 1000 coins and any gold ring in one year. I thought that would be the ultimate. Live and learn.

OMG Cwilk! I have that same problem with my thumb! I never heard of "Metal Detectors Thumb" before. My right thumb is cracked open on both side of the nail! Hurts like @*%$! I have been out tectin here in NY 6 times so far. I doubt I will hit a 1000 coins by April though. I just broke 100 yesterday for 09. Well good luck to ya. (How do you treat the thumb?):garrett:

I put chap stick on the cracks. I find most lotion doesn't cut it. Just make sure you hav one tube for your hands and another one for your lips.

Chris

I'm at 270 coins which is a bit low for me for 6 hunts (5 in Feb, 1 in Jan). You'll find an unhunted site someday and then you'll see how fast they can add up.

Nice job guys. I've been hunting for over 20 years and probably have less than 500 coins to speak of. I only hunt CW relics, which means I'm limiting my search areas, so the ones I do find are out of coincidence and not by intent. On my best day of old coins I did find 2 1922 silver dollars in the same hole. Otherwise my multi coin days are always the newer ones folks lose.

I have found a few (3 or 4) Civil War items. I think you id'ed one (Union Staff Officers Button) for me! It is in my brag book and is my best find of the year. Up here Revolutionary War is more common. I have only done one really serious relic hunt and I didn't like it as much as coin shooting. The guy who was showing me the ropes found a Civil War token (Army/Navy) and a really old half dime which got me very excited excited. I had about a thousand (maybe 50 really) shotgun shell in my pocket at the end of the day and a lot of iron. Lot of walking in between targets. No silver dollars for me except for one clad Ike. I lucked into a sweet gold coin set in a bezel last summer and I can't wait until I find something to replace it as my all time favorite find.

If you post pics of what you find I will probably get the bug for finding some more relics. That's the way it works for me.

There's some stuff called "Corn Huskers Lotion" (really) that's about the best I've seen for that kind of cracking.

Corn Huskers Lotion is a winner...hands down!
Written: Mar 24 '05

Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0
Pros: Inexpensive, oil-free and does not leave hands with a greasy feel. Very effective.

Cons: Has to be reapplied more frequently than most hand creams/lotions.

The Bottom Line: Corn Huskers Lotion is an effective treatment for dry, cracked, irritated hands, and I highly recommend it to anyone.

lonelywind's Full Review: Corn Huskers Lotion
In the winter of 2003, I began to notice dry, scaly patches appearing on my hands. The patches occasionally itched, and never seemed to heal. I tried several different hand lotions/creams, including Lubriderm, which my wife recommended, but nothing seemed to help. Desperate, I made an appointment with a dermatologist, who diagnosed my condition as eczema, and prescribed Ultravate (halobetasol proprionate) Ointment, 0.05%. I tried using the Ultravate, which is a clear ointment in a tube. The Ultravate felt greasy, and never seemed to absorb into the skin, Not only did I not like the feel of it, it rubbed off easily onto clothing, etc., and the multitude of product warnings on the accompanying product information sheet worried me. Although it was somewhat effective, it wasn't something I could use for everyday protection.

So, I decided to try something else. I could remember Paul Harvey in the 80's advertising Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream. I found it on the shelf at Wal-Mart, but was dismayed by the rather high cost, so I studied the list of ingredients (water and glycerin are the two primary ingredients) and decided to look for something similar. Then, I came across something I remember my grandmother having in her medicine cabinet - Corn Huskers Lotion. Noticing that it contained the same primary ingredients as the Neutrogena (and was half the price), I decided to give it a try.

Corn Huskers Lotion (developed originally for the dry hands of Iowa corn huskers) is an almost-clear lotion in a clear plastic bottle with a simple yellow label, stating that it is oil-free and "heavy-duty hand treatment." When applied, it absorbs into the skin very quickly, and indeed does not feel the least bit oily. After it is absorbed, your hands have a slightly tacky feel, but otherwise the lotion is completely absorbed. Other hand creams and lotions invariably leave the hands with a slightly greasy or oily feel, making it hard to grasp objects firmly (the steering wheel of my car, for example). Corn Huskers Lotion does not do this.

After using Corn Huskers Lotion several times a day for the first week, my wife remarked that my hands almost were back to normal. I won't say that Corn Huskers Lotion cures eczema, because it doesn't, but it definitely minimizes the effects. It also keeps the skin of my hands moist, and makes them look and feel years younger. I've used it ever since, keeping a bottle on my desk at work also (my job requires me to use a PC keyboard a lot, which is hard on the hands also).

Keep in mind that different things work for different people. My wife tried the Corn Huskers Lotion herself, and said that it did not work as well on her hands as it did on mine. It's possible that it all depends on skin type, as well as what one is used to with a hand cream or lotion. However, my bottle at work seems to get borrowed a lot by my co-workers!

Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, SD Alcohol 40, Sodium Calcium Alginate, Oleyl Sarcosine, Methylparaben, Guar Gum, Triethanolamine, Calcium Sulfate, Fragrance, Calcium Chloride, Fumaric Acid, and Boric Acid

I used to use udder balm but I can't find the real stuff locally anymore. Up where I was raised there were a lot more dairy farms. I could order it online. There are a lot of pretenders out there with udder in the name that are pure crap. I'll try that Corn Huskers Lotion if Isee it. Medicated Chap Stick heals fingertips fast, though.

Chris

Ask and Ye shall receive.

It's now called Udderly Smooth Udder Balm. You can buy a 3 or 4 oz. tube at Wally World. I have some of that too. Seems to be the same as the
original. Travel size is $1.00.

Also there's some stuff advertised as 'original" at www.originaludderbalm.com

I bought some at Walmart and it was just lotion. I'll look again next time I'm there.

Chris

Wow! I'm learnin a lot tonight. It's on my list for my next trip to Wally World! Thanks so much you guys!:garrett:
