Ferrous vs Conductive sounds, redux. Again.

Hey folks,

First off, just got a new (to me) Explorer 2, so be prepared for a lot of silly questions. Here we go..

I had a little bit of time to swing the Ex2 at a trashy old park. I decided to use IM backed all the way down to a clear screen as I like hearing everything, sensitivity at 15 auto (was able to keep a good threshold, with quick return from each target). I started off with conductive sounds, but it became a little irritating with the same tone whether the target was iron or conductive (on the horizontal axis). I kept having to look at the screen to see if the crosshairs were on the left side or the right side. I decided to switch over to ferrous sounds, and I liked it. I could tell by the pitch as to whether the target was iron or a possible goodie without having to look at the screen. I just ignored the low pitch "thunk thunk" ferrous tones. IF it was high pitched, I knew to check it out closer.
So my question - since I am VERY new to the Explorer (sure, I had an XS several years ago for a month but never really learned it), am I doing myself a disservice by learing the machine in Ferrous sounds rather than Conductive? Should I learn the more "basic" way by staying in smart rather than IM and using Conductive? Does it matter?

Thanks in advance. More questions to come.

First off in Auto sensitivity you dont need to be at 15.... crank it up and let the detector do what its supposed to do. Unless you have a LOT of experience and are picking very very slowly thru trash those tones will soon run together. Even in trash... what i do is open it up just until iron starts sounding like good targets... then pull it up a bit.... for me thats normally around 28 sometimes 26. If you use manual sensitivity... back it off in trash until the smartscreen starts to move... when its freezing on targets the screen is worthless. Nothing wrong with looking at the screen in trash..... ive often gotten some great silver quarters that away.

Ferr..... the problem with those LOW tones you believe are iron.... some arent. Small deeper copper and brass pieces are very very close in tone. Also what ive found is if you are running high sensitivity targets NEAR and not under the coil sound totally different.... which means you need to center the target to get the correct tone.... not so in Cond. Fact is the digits or numbers jump more in Ferr than Cond. Take a look at the digit screen on a target.... do it in cond ... then in ferr. The cond digits are a lot more consistant... that means the tones are because which ever you are in that sets the tones.

You confused me.... smart or IM? you can be in smartscreen using IM... or you can be in smartscreen based on a pattern you made. I use both ferr and cond depending on where im hunting. In a field i like ferr to find those old coppers..... but you still get a high tone in the lower right corner from rust. BUT in a park rarely do i use ferr because im listening to the TONES and those tones are based on what you have your detector set at ... Ferr or Cond and cond is just more stable. This is me.... there are some really GOOD hunters on here that love using Ferr all the time. You can learn either way.... but the pay off is learn to use the one best suited for where you are hunting.

Thanks for the pointers.

I messed up a few things in my first post. I should have said 15 manual not 15 auto.

Also meant smartscreen with IM, not a pattern. Sorry for the mixup.

After a little practice I think I prefer the IM screen with a little iron knocked out in Conductive. Just have to get more practice time.

The only shortcuts to learning the explorer is reading about others mistakes on here. Its very very rare i have to hunt with manual sensitivity that low.... normally 24 is good for most of the areas i hunt. I get some EMI noise.. we all do, but for me its like hunting in trash and picking out the targets others walked away from. You just cant always eliminate all the EMI.... its especially bad when the ground is bone dry.
