I have had the Explorer 11 now for a few weeks but the weather has kept me from getting out to much I have about 12 or so hours out with it and have made a few good finds(the best being an 1874 silver five cent or fishscale as they are called)
A few questions that have come up due to reading a lot of different forums..
1. Sounds I have read that the ferrous is the one to use over conductivity as it gives more difference in silver being a high pitch and iron being a low sound.
2. In the select targets option should everything that you want or don't want be marked with a check mark or an X, what if the are just left unselected?
3. I also read that you should not use headphones that have a limiter built in them, I use my Grey ghosts which do have the limiter I believe?
Thanks and is there a pinpointer other than the sunray that doesn't cause the Exp. to go crazy....
I have read the manual several times and watched the dvd that came with it

This should only be used when running in All Metal or Iron mask wide open or near wide open. As for the rest of your questions. I'll leave to someone else.

There were no five cent silvers minted in 1894. The "Trime" or "Fish-Scale" was a three cent silver that was minted from 1851-1873. The last Seated half-dimes were minted in 1873.

As far as selecting ferrous or conductivity that can be a personal choice. Ferrous does have an advantage though when running in iron mask full. I use gray ghost ndt's and have never had a problem with the limiter. The nugget busters and black widows are the ones without limiters(I think). As far as check marks go, if you X something you will discriminate it out. A check means you accept it. If you don't do anything check or x than it accepts it. The sunray pin pointer is probably the best for the Explorer. I also use the Vibra probe 560 which hasn't been a problem with the Explorer. It does drive my T2 and Coinstrike crazy until it shuts itself off. Hope this helps.

The term "fishscale" referes to the Canadian 5 cent because of the small size.

They sure are a pretty site to see coming out of the ground and makes the finder wonder if it is a Canadian Fishscale or an American Half-Dime. Found my 1874 about 3" deep. Sure was a shock when I seen the date on it. Oldest Coin from this particular site so far. Next oldest is 1883 Indian Head. Where in Canada do you live? I live down in Casselton, N.D., or 20 miles west of Fargo. Hope you make many more great finds up there and Good Luck and HH.

Nova Scotia, this was not the oldest coin from this site. The oldest was a 1679 silver just a tad smaller than the fish scale..
I am sure I will find more as long as I can figure this EXp. 11 out

1. I agree with the rest this is pesonal choice. I use Ferrous but many swear by conduct. Just pick one and stay with it because it is hard to change once you are adjusted(personally not mechanically).
2. If it is check marked you are telling machine to accept, if it is x'ed out then you are telling machine you do not want to detect those. I do not use this option, I use the discriminator between my ears.
3. I use factory issued phones(Koss) and like them fine
4. I have the Vibra Probe and it interfered with my Explorer II so I opted for the Sun Ray and could not be happier. Just get the Sun Ray you will be happy you did. I know it is costly but it pays for itself easily.

I will take all the advice I can get, and as soon as I can afford it I will get the sunray probe. I also have the vibra probe.
