Field hunt with the Omega

Another great November day up here in Michigan with temps in the mid 50's and little wind it felt almost balmy. I wanted to check out a site that I had hunted last with the T2 to see how the Omega would handle the iron. This year it is planted in soybeans where in the past it had been in corn for several years.

Right away I noticed how much quieter the Omega is in iron with the disc set at 16 which is equivalent to the T2's setting of 21. It's handled the iron so well I found myself switching to 2 tone 0 disc on occasion just to see how heavy the iron actually is and if I had wandered out of the iron filled areas. GB was 70-71 and trying to show one bar on the meter during the ground grab procedure. Another plus is this site has absolutely no interference so the sensitivity could be set up pretty high I was running 90 in the cleaner areas dropping only to 80-85 in the heavy iron with no problems of falsing or chatter. At 90+ you can hear some internal noise but very weak and not a bother.

Finds were not great consisting of 3 small rivets one being a Levis 101, A small brass lid off something that gave the VCO squeal even though it was around 6" deep. I immediately thought of relic hunting with that hit. Based on how the lid sounded off, deep buckles and plates should be no problem for the Omega. A 1901 IH, a 2 piece button with no markings and several other non-ferrous items also turned up during the 3 hour hunt.

The verdict at this site? I like it! the lack of iron falsing compared to the T2 is absolutely amazing. For anyone interested in a high performance quiet in iron detector this one is for you.

Thanks for the report. You convinced me just ordered an omega from Richard at backwoods.
May have to wait till spring to test it out as winter is settling in here in Canada. Hoping for a couple of
even bearable days to at least go out and play with it.

thanks for the info on settings...

Did the injun high tone at least partially? Most of the deeper indians (8 to 11") I've found with the Omega have. Makes for instant recognition.

I was using one tone at the time Brad... it gave a nice sweet well modulated hit. I find I do need to go just a bit slower than I am use to with the legacy Fishers (perhaps even the T2?). Of course they needed a pretty fast sweep for best depth.

So far I have dug little iron using single tone, a couple deep horse shoe nails and thats about it. I have 2 other fields to hit if the weather holds.. one where hot rocks were a problem with the 1270 and another that will be the real test. A combination of old iron and rusty tin ect. The worst areas pretty much shut down every machine I have used there.

Tom that's an interesting hunt in the iron. I would like to compare the F75 LTD with the Omega (both with the 11" DD of course) in the same iron environment, should be an interesting test as both are very capable machines.

not depth wise of course but how the F75's bp mode handles iron in comparison. If I had more time yesterday I would have rehunted the worst areas using 2 tone 0 disc. Because it is so quiet using Disc 16 single tone I was probably sweeping the Omega a little too fast for condtions. Hearing the iron can be a benefit.

Hi Dwayner,

What part of Canada are you from? The weather has been unusally warm here in Michigan... too bad it won't last much longer.

Good luck with the Omega!

Tom

I'm a bit west and north of course from you in
Alberta.

I don't think I will be disapointed.
I have hard ground here. Targets are not
extremely deep. I like a quiet hunt.

Should be a good fit for me.

Thanks
