Filter questions...

Are the Ace 250 and the GTP 1350 four filter designs? Is that why they seem to get better depth when you swing them faster?

Where can I get an in-depth lesson in detector filter technology?

I believe they're two filter. The first motion detectors were almost all four filter which is why you had to swing them as if you were killing snakes to get any depth or amplify a faint target for pinpointing. The two filter can be scanned a lot slower and still get decent depth but since they are still motion detectors a little speed here and there ( such as in the procedure called "twitching" ) certainly helps a lot. Since two filters are easier to build they seem to have won out.

Just wondering. Does the 1350 need to be swung as slow as the GTI's, or can you swing them as fast as the Ace?
Thanks.

It needs a moderate speed. Slow creeping wont benefit you much and too fast sweeping, while it does get good hits, will wear you out.
The thing to do with it is to sweep at a normal speed, then slow a bit to process targets or speed up a bit to cover ground.
Think of it as a souped up Ace 250.

Sent you a PM.

Thanks Dave.
A souped up Ace sounds good to me. About the only disadvantage it has to the Ace, is weight. I seem to prefer the audio on the GTI over the Ace, even though it doesn't belltone on our $1 and $2 coins like the Ace does. Targets seem to give more distinct differences, so I assume the 1350 would behave like the GTI in that respect.

The audio on the 1350 is, again, smoother. The Ace is, to me, rather rough and unrefined. Oh, it does alot of the money, but it is akin to a little brother in the lineup. It's like they took the 1350 and stripped it.
The 1350, on the other hand, is just more 'luxe' in every respect. More DISC segments, more adjustments - more of everything. Force to a choice between the two, I'd take the weight penalty of the 1350. In my eyes, it's the only penalty there is between them.

The1350 is a 1250 is a 1500.All the same machine except for non-imaging on one, imaging on another, profiling on the other.. Since they have a lot of info to process slower is better. You can miss some good targets swinging like you're killing snakes. You can swing fast but you'll pass over a lot of targets that don't have time to belltone and will just beep. The upper end Garretts are not speed machines but more of a thinking machine.

I think that you are right on the money Dave. I love what you can do with the Ace, but the audio to me is a big detraction. I'll probably trade it in on the 1350 eventually, but I've already bought 2 detectors this year, so I'll hold off for a while. The 1500 was one of those buys and we're just getting to be friends. It's good to learn more about the 1350 all the same though. thanks for taking the time to write.

Thanks Bill. The GTI's audio will give a good idea of what to expect then. I'm not too worried about missing the bell tone on a faster sweep though, as our modern coins are all too low for the belltone anyway. I guess it will come down to whether a site is clean or filled with metal junk that will determine sweep speed.

I went with the 1350 precisely for the reasons mentioned. I didn't trust the Imaging feature, to be honest, seeing it as only so much fluff. The Profiling seems like it was enough and suits me as a nice compromise, mostly cause I'm a beep and dig type at heart. Too much hi-tech makes me leery, smacking of mere gadgetry.

To me the best feature is that it is dependent only on the length of time the target is under the coil. This means that all the Garrett Crossfire coils will work with the Profiling feature. Not so the Imaging - it requires a special coil, with a third winding.

Thanks Bill for reminding me of the similarities of the machines.
I hear you on the imaging feature Dave. I like it, but it does get a bit tricky on some of our key coins. It's hard to tell a $1 coin from a screw cap. The $1 coin can show up as a B or a C sized target, and screw caps, if they're just under the surface, will tend to give a bit of an overload signal. The $1 coin can do that occasionally.
What attracts me to the 1350, is the elliptical coil. It's what I like about the Ace, but the 1350's tones will be easier to work with than the Ace. I'd miss the Ace's lightness though. Combining the profiling to the target feed back you can get out of the elliptical coil, as well as the better tone system, would make it an excellent machine. Perhaps if I sold both my current units, to have their best features married into the 1350, might be the way to go. The only problem is, I tend to be sentiment with my machines, so parting with them would be hard.

I know what you mean, Mick. I'm in the middle of negotiating a sale of my 1350 as we speak.

Keep in mind that the 1350 has the same three tones as the Ace... low, mid and Belltone. It is the smoother nature of the thing and the Luxe Plus features that make it stand above the Ace. The Profiling is just one of those features.

But, I find don't use it much anymore and it has started to be more weight than I like. I have shoulder/elbow tendonitis issues and the 4 lbs. gets to me after a while. I prefer it over the Ace, but it makes me ache!
Garrett needs to get into the lightweight revolution, bringing a full featured detector to market under 3 lbs. The hobby is going that way, more and more. Just look at Fisher's F series, Whites Prizm, Tesoro's line (they really started it all with their Umax models) and of course, the Aussie Minelab XT's. Soon, weightiness will become a hindrance in the general purpose detector market.

I've always liked the 1350 enough to call it a standby, though. For those who use it and favor it, you can hardly find a detector that will do more for the money. I'll be a little sentimental myself to see it go to a new user, but I'm slimming down, so to speak.

I will be keeping the Ace, though. We musn't lose our head entirely!

I know what it's like to suffer from tendinitis as I've suffered it a few times myself. I've also suffered 3 discs in my neck prolapsing at the same time, 3 years ago. At the time, I'd thought I'd worked my last day, as the doctors were telling me squat. Little own trying to hang onto even a light weight detector. I did get out with one, a couple of months after, but could barely hang onto it. The reason I mention it, is that you may well be able to rebuild the damaged areas, to the point where you'll be able to swing the 1350 again (pain free). Your doc, should be able to help manage the damage, and with a good physio, you may well find that you can restore your shoulder and elbow most of the way back to normal, but it will still feel weak for several years. You may feel that it will never get better, but it will. I think that it took around 4years before the areas that had the tendinitis started to feel normal again. 3 years on from the neck injury and I'm finding that it is still improving. The bottom line of what I am saying, is that with a significant injury like tendinitis, you will feel like it will never heal, but it will, so you just might want to hang onto your 1350, as you will find that you will be able use it again, but it will be a while before you get to that point. 12 months ago, I wouldn't have even considered buying the 1500. 3 months ago, if I swung it more than 2 hours, I had headaches for a week after, now I can swing it for longer. Who knows, in a couple of years, I may be able to swing it all day. Give yourself the time to heal and you may be surprised at what you will be able to do again.
Mick Evans.

... But it's a done deal. The 1350 is paid for and will ship to it's new owners, Friday.

But it's alright, I'll just get another one sometime down the line, if get to fancying another go at one.
In the meantime I have the Ace 250 and several other units to keep me swinging.
