Final hunt for 2006 :detecting:

I haven't posted any pics on here for a long time, I thought I would show my goodies from the last trip of the year. I headed to one of our seriously hunted to death ghetto parks for the afternoon and did pretty good...

2 Seated dimes 1857 and 1877, a few Mercs 1917S, 1919S, 1923, 1939D, 1943D a dateless Standing Quarter, 1943S Warnickel, 1887 and 1903 Indians, 3 Minies, 2 Musket balls, gold filled cuff link, a brass milk chocolate tag with an unreadable name at the top, a St. Louis Police button from the turn of the century, and a silver earring that looked like a tab tail at first. The pic isn't very good so it doesn't do anything any justice.

I ended the year with 140 silver coins... 13 of them seated and 1 silver dollar... 111 Indians and some other goodies. A far cry from the numbers I used to do in my previous years when I was still single, but still pretty good for only hunting a couple weekends and a couple evenings after work a month. I will get some pics of the year's finds up soon!

Hope everyone had a great New Year and good luck with your detecting for 2007! Take care and HH, Mike.

Hey Mike,

Good to see you posting. I'm right now doing laundry for my girl friend's daughter and her little 8 month old daughter. Did not get out this year nearly as much as previous years. And my finds reflect this.

Always respect your opinions, thought your post on asking permission was very well thought out.

Hope you keep posting.

Have you kept up with Ric(Il) at all?

Chris

You sure found a lot of nice finds in a Ghetto Park that you say has been Hunted to Death! Just goes to show you that there is more left in old hunting spots than one thinks when they put in the serious time and effort working sites thoroughly. Fantastic Outing Mike! 2 Seated in one outing is Outstanding also, along with the Standing Liberty Quarter and the Merc's. How long did you hunt on this outing to get these kind of results and was there a lot of Trash Signals? I can't wait until you post your finds for the year and Good Luck and HH in 2007! :detecting::thumbup:

I would say that you did better than pretty good Mike.........:) You guys back east find those seated coind like candy and after four years of detecting here on the west coast I'm still waiting for my first one. I'm hoping that 2007 will be my year to get my seated. Nice finds Mike and a great way to end the year. HH.

When I say that these parks are hunted to death, I mean everyone in the area has run Explorers through them time and again and the good signals are hard to come by...(I can't count how many times I got a deep silver hit that got me excited that turned out to only be a freshly fired bullet) but by the nature of these parks being trashy, mineralized, and full of iron, - once in a great while you hit it on a day where the stars are aligned just right and signals seem to jump out wherever you hunt. Since these parks are 130+ years old, they have stuff still to find, but they are extremely hard for a detector to pick them up on most days.

This particular batch of finds came from a corner of the park, in the worst part of North St. Louis that usually has a lot of morning booze-hounds hanging around, so I had never hunted there in the past... but one morning no one was there, so I gave it a try and there were lots of signals to dig, even though the area was LOADED TO DEATH with screw-caps and pull-tabs. Just hunt REAL slow and dig any repeatable hit that sounds deep in-between the constant blare of surface trash. This stuff took 5 hours to find... I could have hit that same spot on a different day when the ground conditions were different and did worse... or better, that is why we keep hitting the same spot over and over... but it does get to the point where you just can't scare much up from the ground anymore. If you work at it long enough, you'll get lucky and hit a small spot with a few good signals to dig - but you pay your dues with a lot of non-productive swinging.

Take care and HH, Mike.

Me and a few buddies have worked too death a Park in Fargo, ND called Island Park the past few years and if you find 1 Old Coin in a few Hours, you did good. Lots of Seated and Barbers along with a ton of Indians come from that Park and now we just stop by every once in a while if we don't have much time to detect and see if we can't pull one more out of her. Very tough but once in a great while a person will find either a stray Indian Head or a get really lucky and find a Barber Dime but the Silver is for the most part long gone. Wish sites like these wouldn't die off so quickly but I know that there is still stuff there, we just have to wait until Minelab comes out with a machine that goes another 6 Inches deeper and then it will be like virgin ground again. Hope you hit that Park again and make some more Nice Finds and Good Luck and HH to you in 2007.:detecting:
