Started out hunting the same old parks today with the same dismal results, so tried an old house site with better results.
6 Weaties, 1 Buffalo, 1 silver Rosie, and 1 silver Nickel, all in about 2 Hrs. Haven't found anything deeper than 4 or 5 in. with the Explorer II until today. (Was beginning to think you guys were full of poop!). Dime was about 8 in. and was unmistakable. I don't think the setup of the machine was as important as hunting where the coins are.

voila! i think you've hit on the secret - can't squeeze blood out of a turnip, so the saying goes... congrats on the finds. MANY more to come. hh.

Indeed if no deep silver you are not going to find..In my neck of the woods an Explorer is a 10 inch plus unit, but your area may differ and the coins might not sink as deep. Many settings work in many areas, but if you don't have a good area indeed your finds may be poor...just can't find whats not there..

You are right! There may not be anymore deep coins in that other spot. Glad you got some goodies. Had you hunted the house site before with your Fisher?

Congrats Jim! I have noticed that my Maximum depth varies alot from site to site. Even the sounds of deep coins can get slightly differ from site to site. I always look at it that nobody is probably getting any better depth than I am so I live with it.

i have found that an 8" deep silver dime is rock solid on the explorer, in both sound and id.
but...if a person has no coins in their area that deep, they'll never experience it.
and, if i lived and hunted in an area that didn't have deep targets, i might not even own an explorer.
deepest dime i've dug so far with the explorer is a merc at 11", many old silver dimes i've dug have come from 9-10".
coins in areas i hunt get deep. and i wonder how many are so deep, that even the explorer can't reach them.
