My son Jacob was born in Orlando, FL. last Thursday the 27th. He was 6 lbs. 3 oz. He spent his first few days of life in the NICU there so this was the best pic I could get. He is doing great - he was born with a birth defect called Spina Bifida that affects about one in 5,000 newborns. This condition was detected early in the pregnancy through ultrasound, so we were well prepared for this challenge - and it will be a lifelong challenge for Jacob. He faces many years of follow up treatment and therapy to help him have as normal of a life as possible.
His condition is basically a defect in how his spine developed during pregnancy and it has many complications including lower limb function and development, bowel/bladder function, mental development, and many others. Jacob is very fortunate that his condition is mild and only affects the very end of his spine at his lower back. The doctors say that he has a good chance to walk and function on a near normal level by the time he is grown which is a miracle that my wife and I and many others have been praying for.
He still has an uphill battle before him, but at least he starts out in a very good position. Sorry for this off topic post but many were wanting to hear how his birth went. He's going to keep me busy a while so I won't find much time for detecting, but I will keep in touch. Mom is doing fine and we are on cloud nine with our gift from God <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt="
