Finally found 2nd Seated of the year!

Found most of the finds posted on Saturday. Today I went out for a little bit but only found a few Wheats. Sure could use some rain around here due to the ground getting a bit hard to dig in areas. What I found this weekend was alright but sure seems to be getting tougher for older coins. Anyways, the first signal on Saturday rang in on Digital as a solid 27 which in turn I thought for sure was going to be a Wheatie. I dug the signal and out popped a grey looking disc and I thought for a minute it was one of those play coins made out of Aluminum but turns out when I looked closer it was a Seated Dime that was worn. I then looked for the date and I couldn't believe it when I saw it. It turned out to be an 1854 Seated Dime, which beats my oldest Seated Dime by 2 yrs. Well worn but still a Seated. On with the finds. I found 6 Silver including the Seated Dime. They were 1 Washington Quarter dated 1936, 1 Seated Dime dated 1854, 3 Mercury Dimes dated 1918-d,1940-d, and 1945-s, and 1 Canadian Dime dated 1953. I found 2 Tokens which included a Maverick Token that says Good For 5c In Trade on the front and on the back it says 1757. The other Token is a Good For 5c In Trade Ivar Lein on the front and the back says The Brunswick Balke Collender Compy Check with what appears to be a Pool Table on it. This was in the same area as the Seated Dime. I also found 14 Wheats dated 1915-s,1920,1924,1929-d,1935-d,1937-d,1940-d,1941-d,1945-d,1947-d,1950-d,(3)1951-d, and 1 1959-d Lincoln Memorial Cent. I also found a 4-H Pin and some other misc. piece that has a red stone on it. I also found the some clad with 19 Quarters,18 Dimes and 26 Pennies. This was just a small amount of what I chose to dig and if I would have kept digging clad I would have had at least 5X the amount listed. My partner found 8 Silver which included one of the best Barber Dimes I have ever seen come out of the ground. It was an 1897 with absolutely no wear on it with full Headband. I am going to try and post a pic of it as soon as possible so everyone can see what a really nice Barber Dime looks like. He also found a bunch of Wheats, a couple Tokens, a 1901 Indian and who knows what else. Also before I end this, Where I found that Seated Dime, there was a bunch of plugs in the area. Dale swung over one of the plugs and there in the hole was a Clad Quarter. He found 3 Quarters in plugs which just tells me someone out there is not that smart and leaves all the clad coins no matter what. One of the dumbest things I have ever seen. James!!!!!! I"m amazed at you, Nice finds and congratulations on your seated dime. Nice to see the tokens in fair shape and I have always tried to find history on Maverick Tokens, I have a couple with quite the story behind them. They aren't worth much but still nice finds. Those are pretty neat buttons also. WTG
 
Lot of nice coins there. Better than any of my weekends in the last year! Congratulations on the second seated. My son and I don't find a lot of those either.

Nice going James............:) That's great finding your second seated coin of the year. I'm still holding out hope that my first seated coin will be found one of these days........:) Nice bunch of finds you have there buddy. We all enjoy reading and looking at your great finds. Hi, Nice finds as usual. The tokens are always very interesting - I've found a few, but they don't seem to be as prevalent here in the NY area, as you "westerners" seem to find a lot more of them. Was this due to a shortage or shortages of hard currency at some point?

I went back last night to re-scan the hole that the seated quater came out of and found nothing else to my surprise. I did dig a few deep memorial cents nearby and now I'm wondering if the stratigraphy there has indeed been disturbed at some time in the past. Maybe the quarter was next to another coin at some point before the dirt was moved. I don't know -- it's baffling -- as I've pulled some nice coins from a small area across the street, but this is the first good coin (other than a handfull of wheaties) that I've pulled from the main section of this park.

If I have the time I will try an remove all targets from a gridded area and try to see if there's anything down deep. Maybe the stuff is too deep now for the Explorer which would be a damned shame.

Anyway, congrats on the seated dime!
 
Don't worry Eddie, the time will come when you least expect it like it did for me on Saturday. I guess it come in as a Wheatie since it was so thin. If I were you, I would go to the oldest spots and go slow with deep on and listen for those faint signals and I bet there is a Seated out there with your name on it just waiting for you to swing your coil over it. Too bad I didn't live around there or I would have you take me to that spot were you guys have your hunts at and I would show you what the ultra deep targets sound like. Yea, those Seated are a tough coin to find in North Dakota area but they are out there if you are lucky to find the spots they are resting at. Thanks a lot for the comments about my finds and Good Luck and HH.
 
1 Barber Dime and 1 Indian Head Penny found on Saturday but we haven't hit this new hot spot hard yet. We are waiting until a little more into the fall so there isn't so many people around. I wanted to find an Indian and a Barber coin but it just wasn't meant to be this weekend. Will see what happens this next weekend. August 19th is our Club Hunt so I will be posting the hunt finds and if possible some real finds made during that weekend. Good Luck and HH.
 
that Seated Quarter Erik. But I guess if they did move the dirt around a bit that it was pushed away from the Quarter as you have said. I am not sure why there are so many Tokens in the Mid-Western States but there should be more in your neck of the woods. Good Luck and HH and Thanks for the kind words.

The only other thing I can think of was that there was some other piece of metal (iron?) next to it (that caused the corrosion) that is being masked when I re-scan the hole. I'm in IM mode but not -16.

Re the tokens, I'm reading the book Andrew Jackson by H.W. Brands currently, and though his time was before the tokens you are finding, he mentions the periods of shortage of coin. I think it was during these periods that merchants started issuing tokens. I'm about 45 minutes from NYC so I'm not sure if they had the same money shortages near me. Either that or I'm just not finding them. :shrug: Then again I don't have the time currently to MD that much :cry:
 
Congrats on the excellent finds! It's always great to see a seated coin in your hole no matter if it's well worn or not. I'll take them anyway I can get them. I noticed our ground is starting to get hard too. I'd like to see that sweet barber dime too... :)

Erik,

I would be inclined to reopen the hole you found your seated quarter in a rescan it using a handheld probe. I've actually seen instances where I spotted the coin in the hole as I was swing over the hole and the machine wasn't giving a peep. Any detector can act flaky in disturbed dirt. I've also seen silver discolored by mineral rich soil. Good Luck!

That is why they did make the tokens. The lack of coinage. You are correct on that Erik. I am not sure about if there was a big impact out east but there has to be Tokens somewhere. Do you dig digital numbers from say 20-25 and if not you should. I have found quite a few Tokens that read 24 or 25 on digital. Hope this helps you out a bit and hope you are able to get out more often real soon. Good Luck and HH!

Hi, I never use digital - Smart Screen only in IM mode. I essentially now dig any repeatable target where the frequency doesn't fluctuate too much ( although I have dug good things occaisionally that I thought would be junk because of the tone changes). I used to use heavy discrimination with a large block open in the upper left corner years ago when I was still learning, but I know now this is not a good idea (you'll miss too much good stuff). I'm starting to lean towards digging just about everything that's deep, but sometimes think it might be a good idea to remove all the shallow stuff if possible because sometimes there are super deepies lurking underneath. Well I hope I do find more tokens as I think they're more interesting than coins.
