FINALLY...I found something with my 70:shrug:

I've owned my X-Terra 70 for one month. Yesterday, I actually found something with it.
A small metric bolt. WOO HOO!! Found it right on top of the ground under a covered picnic table area.

This doesn't mean that my 70 isn't working....it beeps at me all the time. It's just that we are having a REAL winter again in Montana. It's difficult to find bare ground, and when I do, the 0 F temperatures for the past 3 weeks make digging impossible.
I picked a poor time to get into metal detecting.

C'MON SPRING!!!

I'm sure that by spring you will be singing a different tune........"Got another one".

Welcome to the forum. Be sure to check out the faq faq post at top of page. Lots of good stuff to read while you can't detect. You have a good detector , just wait until it gets warmer and see what you find.

Yep...read, read, read....play with the detector.
Watch a video....play with the detector.
Read, read, read...play with the detector.

Can't do much else, but will probably make hunting much easier when I can eventually go outside.

I did some air testing with both coils last night. (9" MF Concentric, 5x10" HF DD) I thought that the HF DD coil would be better for meteorites, so that's what I've been using. After the air test(coins and meteorites)...now I'm not so sure.

When it's snowing, have a look at my YouTube Channel :)

For some X-Terra 705 action down under :detecting:

Go to a parking lot and detect the snow piles. Sure to find some change.

I live in a town with a population of appox. 350......not sure I'd find anything.

Hang with it! I have had mine for three years and I have done really well with it. It has a small learning curve but not much, before long you will be finding the goods. Post what settings u are using at the tot lots, maybe me or someone here can help you out. If you are in Montana the old homeplaces there should yield some noteworthy relics. Good luck! GH

Sounds like we got our detectors about the same time - WINTER. Not as cold here in Delaware as MT, but too cold to dig in the dirt. Lucky enough here to have the ocean beaches where the sand is not as prone to freezing. Do you have and lakes that have sandy swimming beaches? Might give you an alternative place to hunt until the air warms back up.

Where in Montana are you living? Im in north Idaho and seem to have the same problem. I have a new 705 coming and the ground is still covered and hard as a rock.

No...no sandy beaches around here. I'd have to drive 2-3 to find a lake with some sand.....and I might just do that this summer. But there are closer lakes that I'll be hitting this spring.

Blueduck: I live in the center of Montana.(draw a X, that's where I am)

I've been running my detector over every patch of grass that shows. I can't dig much yet, but I try and remember where the good sounding targets are...for later. I think it will help in the long run. I'm learning all of the detectors controls and capabilities without the distraction of digging a nail or pulltab every 2 minutes.
