Finally know what it feels like....

To dig a real deep coin that is....Only had a short time to go out today. It was in the low 40's and calm so I thought I would to out for an hour or so. I detected in a place I usually go that produces civil war bullets and older coins every once in a while. I found a walking liberty half there not too long ago.

It was about to get dark so I went to an area I had never tried. Started getting some shallow targets right off the bat but I figured they were cans the way there were sounding off. Went a little farther and got a good sounding signal that registered deep. I pinpointed it and started digging, I got down pretty deep and was able to get a signal on the X-1 probe. Dug some more until the hole was as deep as the entire probe itself. Finally got the coin out and it turned out to be an 1884 indian head penny if I am reading the date right. I covered the hole and then ran my coil back over it. Got another signal. I opened the hole back up and dug a few inches further down and pulled out 3 more wheat pennies.

I know there has to be some old silver in this spot too but I have just not ran my coil over it yet. I know the place has been hit pretty hard over the years but I also know they cant get it all. Especially if they weren't using an explorer.....;o)

Nice going Bill and a great story.:clapping: Would you mind sharing your settings that you used to get the deep stuff? I'm sure others would like to know as well. I'm not saying your settings will work for everyone, but we do like to know what works for guys that post stuff. Again, great finds and good luck on your return trip. HH.

It's funny you asked that. I was playing around with my settings just yesterday in my test garden and setup the detector what seemed to work best. When I found those pennies the first thing I did was to save the user settings.

Here are the settings and a picture of the pattern I was using.

Sens 30 - Manual - probably could have ran it at 32. I was not getting any falsing.
10 Maxlimit
10 Gain
7 TH. Tone
9 Variability
10 Limits
Conduct Sounds
Response Normal
Recovery Deep

I used the learn feature for some of it. You can completely black out the screen and then use the learn feature to accept what you want. In this case I took some nickels that I had found and waved them in front of the coil with the learn feature set to accept and with the smallest block highlighted and then expanded it to the left a little. Seems like deeper nickels hit farther over to the left. I took the worst corroded zinc penny I could find and did the same thing with it. I knew it would hit a little farther down the scale and most coins should hit at that level or above. I took some square tabs that hit just below zinc penny and waved them in front of it to make sure they were discriminated out. I then just opened it up to the left a little. This is a good pattern if you are working in a real trashy area and just want to try and pickup coins. It seemed to work fine on the deep pennies today.
