Finding some - tossing some

steve in so la

Well-known member
I have been doing a big park field for some time now, working it down. I dug this silver dime yesterday and some clad coins.

The pennies are mostly pitted, eaten away, etc and I throw them away. The coin star wont take them either. Do you all have this problem ?

The clad is in good shape always. While I dug 18 coins in 4 hours yesterday, the occasional gold or silver item keeps me going. steve in so az

People that hunt current parks etc. are not surprised to find current coins that are corroded beyond recognition.
Even some yards or places that hold older copper can be quite ugly if fertilized to death as it can wreak havoc on them as well.
I do not see what else you could do with them personally being they cannot be used for tender as they are un-recognizable. Maybe make a sculpture out of them after they have been tumbled but, it beats me?
Good job on the Silver and Gold :clapping:

Is that the first silver coin of the year? Yes we have zincers just rot away up here too. Bank won't take them either.

understand the Gov't has to replace deteriorated coins and rotten and torn dollars for newer ones! Maybe this wouldn't be for pennies, as would take a lot to turn in for replacement, but I would think wrapping them and turning them into another bank that you don't bank with might take them or even yours! Once they are wrapped they won't know what you have amongst the good pennies! One time I had a corroded penny either given to me or that I found and I put it in with my money when buying groceries...well this same penny came back to me, as the same checker saved it for me! Now how is that for a coin tale??? Don't know what I did with it....maybe wrapped it, I just don't remember! May God Bless you to continue finding gold and silver! Amen! Ma Betty

The Z pennies I find that are corroded badly get tossed. The pennies newer than '64, that are in good shape, go into a jar and I take them into Meijers and cash them out just before Christmas each year.

Nice dime Steve, I to hate zincers too, how deep was the dime!

Must be the size of the coins,so they don't sink to deep I guess.

Hi Steve,

yep all the way up here in CT I have the same disgusting problem - rotten z-pennies lol For the most part I can pretty well identify the zinc penny as they show up on my meter at 175 / 176. (I use a sov GT with a DTI II meter) towards the end of Fall I knew my days were numbered for hunting so while I was out in the field, I bypassed many of them. Being newer / shallower coin, they give off a rough distinct sounding tone. I even challenged myself this summer (many times) to prove to myself (before I dug the target) that this distinct tone I kept on hearing was indeed a zinc penny. I have a about two hundred of these sitting in a container. Why? I am not quite sure lol. I think I challenged myself quite a bit this year and now I have a good idea of what to look over when I am pressed for time or have limited time to hunt private property. Being this was my first year with the Sov GT, I had to learn the machine and the tones it makes. Don't get me wrong, I will still challenge myself from time to time but not like I did this past year.

Nice silver dime! - they are always welcome. Silver and REAL copper pennies have a 180 meter reading / high pitch sweet smooth tone to them on my machine. And I agree with you the silver and gold are motivators to keep us looking. No real gold for me yet - but I have found plenty of silver coins and some very nice rings this past year. Wish me luck in finding my first real gold ring and may it be in the year 2012! Another 90 days or so before I can resume hunting :( Happy Hunting! - Jim

Hi Jim, if enough people turned in these destroyed pennies, the Gov't would get wise and quit producing worthless metal coins! They make them and they should replace them, as the banks turn in older money to the larger bank and the money is replaced, if possible, even hidden money that has rotted over time from jars breaking and containers leaking! It is their worthless coins and paper dollars, so let them replace them! I hope eventually the dollars will be replaced by coins that will not deteriorate like the pennies, so detectorists will have the benefit of finding them like in Canada! The pics show how our Gov't produces worthless coins out of useless metals! May you be blessed to find lots of gold rings along with more of the larger silver coins! Remember, patience in detecting is the main thing and like you, I have passed over pennies to get the larger coins when tired and not feeling up to par! May God Bless you and yours! Amen! Ma Betty

of lost coins could be found in the 80's and 90's ! May God Bless to keep you able to go detecting and find the silver and gold! Amen! The clads do add up though...even if they're made of worthless metals!  Ma Betty

make it waiting 90 days to detect ! I have a hard time waiting 2-3 days. Glad you are still experimenting with your machine - that's what increases the take, Steve

LOL I have no choice Steve the ground is frozen and Connecticut has a snow storm on the way :( I know 90 days seems so far away
Well, until that time I will be performing lots of research for the upcoming season. HH and keep posting as it is keeping me motivated for Spring!
HH - Jim

I am with you Ma, However the U.S. has minted millions upon millions of dollar coins and they are stock piled in vaults around the U.S. because the majority of the public doesn't want them.

in the past ( if my ex and I had hindsight, we would have kept all those Silver Dollars we had during vacationing out West in the early 60's) I sure would like to dig up those larger amount coins but I cannot now unless God, in Jesus' name, renews my health and gives me strength to do so! Sure miss :detecting:   Ma Betty
