Finds from 6/5/10 and 6/6/10.

Hello once again everyone. Back with the finds from 2 weekends ago. So let's not waste time and let's get to it.

Saturday......I decided to head east and try a different location to see what kinds of finds I could make. Anyways....I never did make it to this location that I had in mind due to a change of plans. I drove by the Fairgrounds where I hunted with Dan and Rich Alfano and noticed 2 detectorists swinging away. I hit the brakes on the car and turned around. I pulled in and figured I better get what I can from this spot since I had no idea how long these fella's had been hunting this site, never seen them before and didn't want whatever was left to disappear without knowing just what was left here at this site. I kinda figured this was going to happen since too many people knew where this spot was which was one of the reasons for doing a drive by to see if anyone was hunting it. I didn't get a chance to talk to these gentlemen but they did hunt for a couple hours and didn't seem like they were the talking type to tell anyone if they were finding anything or not so I just stayed over in my area as they worked theirs. It seemed like they were using White's and either a Fisher or Tesoro but not sure 100% on this since I never got close enough to see. After a few hours they got into their vehicle and left....and they never came over to see if I was finding anything or not which I thought was kinda odd since most hunters will go chat with others and see what they are finding.

Anyways.....this site seemed to be hit pretty hard now since it seemed like I would go at least 30 minutes without finding as much as a Wheatie and then pick up a Wheatie or an Indian Head. I worked for another good 7 hours or so on Saturday and boy........did I have to work for the finds I did get. I bet I went a good 2 hours (at least that is what it seemed like since the time just flew by) without even coming across an Old Coin and it sure wasn't like it was compared to the first time I visited this spot. Anyways.....I did come across a Merc and Rosie early in the hunt which I thought might be the only Silver's for the day. I then come across an 1892 Barber Dime that shocked me since it was located out in an area where I hadn't found any Older Coins before. I worked this a bit and nothing and moved onto the spots where I had found other Coins before. Then another Wheatie would surface. As I hunted....I wondered if the fella with the White's that was here the weekend before had come back every day during the week and worked the site but who knows for sure....it could have been the other fella's that just left. I eventually ran into a good Nickel hit and dug it. That turned out to be a 37-d Buffalo Nickel. As I worked I would pop out another Indian Head and Wheatie and then I finally found another Merc dated 16. I worked this area a bit but nothing else but a Wheat and another Indian Head. I then decided I had enough detecting time here and started heading towards the car.

That's when it happened!!! I walked about 25' or so from where I dug the Merc and got a good 28 on Digital that was about the right depth as the other Barbers I had dug last time here. I dug a plug and out pops an 01 Barber Dime. Finally I said to myself!!! I then started doing a pattern here and about 6-8' away I got another 28 reading. Dug that and out pops another Barber Dime dated 1899. Now that's more like it!!! I kept working this area and popped out another Indian Head and a Wheatie or 2. I then started towards the car again and had walked maybe 20-30' and come across another good 28 reading. Dug that and out pops another 01 Barber Dime. Worked that area and soon after another Barber Dime surfaces dated 1913. I worked and worked a bit more and after about 20 minutes decided to pack it in for the day. The hunt turned around for me during that short hour and a half or so when I was heading back to the vehicle and if it wasn't for the finds starting to surface then.....I would have had a lot less for finds that's for sure but you always have to be glad of what you get on your outings since some can be real bears if you know what I mean. Saturdays finds were 5 Barber Dimes which I never thought I would get again....especially the way the hunt was going, 3 Merc's, a Silver Roosevelt Dime, a few Wheats, Buffalo Nickel, 6 Indian Heads, a Cracker Jack Token and a few other Misc. Finds as well.

Sunday....I decided to head south this time and try out a Football Field where I had done well at before in the past. I hunted this for a few hours and did manage to get 3 Silver from here. One of them I thought was a Play Coin since it was dull grey and didn't look like a Dime at all. That turned out to be a 1911 Barber Dime which was a shock since I never got Injuns or Barber from this Football Field before. It was also pretty thin and worn as you can see. I also dug 2 Roosevelt Dimes. I was able to find a bent up Silver Ring also and I even got lucky and found a Good For 5

James, Really great finds! I don't post very often, mostly lurk. You are apparently very experienced with this machine. I know this SE I bought is just waiting on me to spend some time with it. Thanks for sharing!

WOW, what a couple of days. My time with my SE has been limited, but I hope I can soon find more time to get out. Thanks for posting.

James as per your usual hunts and storys. Excellent reading and Awsome Finds. I am still planning a trip to the McClusky area this year. But due to some medical issues it will be later on, maybe in the early fall. I hope to meet up with you for some field time . But in the meantime just keep on swingin and and showing the finds and the interesting posts. Oh are the metal strips cattle ear tags? Look very similar to what they use here in central IL.

Great Post

Hey there Bill! You just let me know when you plan on being in the area and hopefully we can meet up and do some hunting together.

Steve......the more time you spend on using your Se the better you will become in knowing what the detector is telling you and possibly bring home a few nice old coins.

Bummer....thanks for the reply. Barber Coins are one of my favorite to find not only because they are the late 1800's - early 1900's coins but I just love the design of them.....especially the backs of the Quarters and Halves.

Bobby.....any amount of time you put in with your Se will help improve your understanding of the unit and get you more keepers. Also.....the faster you learn this detector the better your odds will be in making great finds before others find the sites you either know about or visit. I'd learn the machine ASAP so you get more keepers before others get them.

Thanks again to you fella's for the reply and glad you enjoyed the post. Until my next post......Best of Luck and HH to you all.

James - Thanks for another excellent post and some really nice finds. That 1901 Barber is especially nice. Check your '37-D Buffalo nickel - maybe you got real lucky and it's a 3-legger. The 14th Minnesota Vols. token is reputed to be from Ft. Snelling in St. Paul, at least that's what's listed on www.tokencatalog.com. Looks to be early 1900s - possibly Spanish-American War to WWI era but that's just a guess. Neat stuff and thanks for your posts and happy hunting!

Great job on the article James and some sweet
finds to boot. Always enjoy reading about and seeing
the treasures you find on your outings. Thanks for
sharing and HH Gold Nuggets :wiggle:

Glad you liked the posting and pics of my finds once again. Thanks for the reply Gold Nuggets and thanks for the info on the token item I found TokenDigger. I will go check that out! Good Luck and HH to you both on your next outings.

Another great hunt James!!! Keep it up:clapping:

man james you suck. we went out there on the 9th and didnt get jack. by now the spot is prolably almost hunted out. well good finds and HH.

It's been a tough spot and takes a lot of time before you hit a good area but it's been worth it. Hope you get out Dan and find a few keepers real soon.....if you know what I mean. Have you been getting out much Derrelld??? Good to see your still around Montanagold as well. Thanks for the replies and Good Luck and HH to all 3 of you on your next outings.

Hi James,

JeffinMass here. I've had literally zero time to hunt all year, so I'm hunting vicariously through you! You never stop finding that silver- incredible and great work!

You should consider emailing Kirk (Utah)- he came east to Mass a month or so ago and did pretty well- with the amount of coins you find in ND, you'd probably find at least as many and probably quite a few older ones- think about it.

Continued success my friend!

Jeff
