Well, it's been awhile since I've posted my finds so I thought I better get them up and running. Haven't been hitting it hard like I was during the rest of the season and have been sticking close to home hunting old pounded sites and have squeezed out a few keepers from them. Well, let's get to it!
Saturday, the 17th....Dale and I got together to do some detecting since Tim has decided to do more game hunting now. We didn't get going until around 8:30-9:00am on Saturday and decided to give a few spots a try more locally. Dale decided to bring the shotgun with just in case we seen some pheasant while out running around. Well, as for the pheasant hunt during Saturday....that was a total bust since we never seen 1 hen or a pheasant during the course of that day. Lots of crops were still up so whatever pheasant running around were most likely in the fields hiding.
First spot we decided to try was an Older Ball Diamond that doesn't seem to get any kind of use anymore due to the decline of the town and the population. We hunted this spot for a few hours and it was pretty tough. Dale ended up pulling 2 Merc's, a Boys Scout Medallion from the 60's and a couple Wheats. I in the other hand ended up hunting where the infield was. There was a bunch of weeds growing through the red gravel that they use here and I would say about half of it was covered in weeds so it wasn't going to hurt anything here. First signal I dug turned out to be a Wheatie in here. The odd thing was the gravel wasn't but 2-3" Deep and then it went to a very black sandy soil which was different than the outfield dirt. The Coins I got from here were only around 4" Deep or so also, which was odd since any detector could have found them. I mainly hunted this area but occasionally ventured out into the outfield with only a few Wheats for my effort out there. From the infield alone...I dug 1 Indian Head Penny, 1 Good Luck Souvenir Token, a Sterling Pin, part of a Cuff Link, 2 Rosie's, a Merc and about 6 Wheats or so. I picked up a couple more Wheat in the outfield also. We decided after a couple hours hunting, to move onto another location.
We decided to go try out a Fairgrounds that I have gotten a few Barbers from in the past but not many. Dale wanted to know where I had found the Barbers before and I told him out in the outfield of the Ball Diamond here. We started hunting in the parking area of the Fairgrounds with a few Wheats showing up and some good ole Clad. I then was heading towards the Ball Diamond when I came near a smaller tree. I was about a good 5' away from it and got a good sounding 28 on Digital that showed about 4" Deep. I figured it was going to be another Clad Coin and almost walked away from it but decided to dig it and just add it to the Ice Cream Bucket at home. I dug a plug and flipped it open. I then removed some dirt and seen a shiny back of a Dime in it. I then noticed a Penny sitting in the hole as well and figured a Newer Penny had been stuck to the Dime giving that still shiny look. I picked up the Penny and looked at it. To my surprise.....it turned out to be a 1941-d Wheatie! I then picked up the Dime and noticed it wasn't Clad at all but a Silver Dime! I flipped it over and the entire obverse was still covered in dirt so I flipped it back over and took a closer look since the dirt was virtually gone from the back due to being with the Penny. I then realized that the back was that of a well worn Barber Dime!
I then yelled over to Dale and told him I just found a Barber Dime. I told him it was with a 41-d Wheatie also. He then asked what the year was and I then gently wet the date area of the Dime to get the dirt to loosen up a bit and took my finger nail and lifted the wet chunk off. Turned out to be a 1913. I then said "wait a minute.....I thought I saw a Mint Mark on the back". I then flipped it over and I was right. It was a 1913-s Barber Dime!
I knew right away that it was a good one since I have been looking everywhere to land one of these Dimes. Tim has found 2 of them, one in High Grade and one worn out. I thought it was worth more than it actually is but it's still a great find. There were only 510,000 minted of this Date and Mint Mark and it only books for $28 in G-4 but the good thing is...is that this is one more Barber Dime closer to having all the harder to find ones for this series.
We then continued hunting and started heading into the Ball Diamond Area hoping to land a few more Barbers or any other type of Silver. It didn't take me long to pull a Silver Rosie from here and I also got 1 or 2 Wheats in here as well. Dale ended up digging a Barber Dime and a Merc in the same hole here which was great to see as well. We kept hunting for around 2 hours or so with very little to show for but it was well worth it in retrieving just a few more keepers before winter settles in around here. Total take for Saturday was 1 Barber Dime, 3 Silver Rosie's, 1 Merc, 1 Indian Head Penny, 15 Wheats, a Sterling Pin, part of a Cuff Link and 1 Good Luck Souvenir Token. Clad consisted of 13 Quarters, 19 Dimes and 23 Pennies. Dale ended up digging 8 Wheats, 1 Barber Dime, a Brass Railroad Key, 4 Merc's and 1 Silver Rosie. He also got one Older Canadian Penny.
Sunday, I decided to go give the Ball Diamond another try where I got a Walking Liberty Half recently and a few more Silver and other goodies as well. I didn't know what to expect for finds so it was going to be interesting.
I started detecting in the Parking Area again. I wasn't detecting 5 minutes and popped out a Wheatie near the car. I then started to wander around a bit in the Parking Area hoping to pull some Silver somewhere but never did. I did pull 2 more Wheats though and some more Clad Coins. I then decided to try the Ball Diamond once again. I started working a Pattern further out where I had left off. I worked the Ball Diamond for a few hours with minimal results. I did have one good hole though but not with anything Old in it. From this hole came 2 Saq. Dollars and a Dream Catcher Medallion/Token. That was a fun find to make since Dollar Coins are not found much and the Dream Catcher item was a great bonus. I also found a Good For Token too. I was hoping that it had the town name on it since the tokens from the town I was in are pretty good and worth a few bucks but to my dismay...it didn't have the town name on it. In fact, the Good For Token was the biggest joke of the day for finds! Normally, Good For Tokens is one of the top things I hope to find on my outings but not like this one! This one read Good For 10c In Trade. I then went to flip it over and I dropped it on the ground. I picked it back up and Good For 10c In Trade. I didn't think anything of it at the time so I flipped it over thinking it must have landed with the obverse down. I looked on the other side and it read Good For 10c In Trade. I couldn't believe it!!!!! I was ripped off!
Oh well I guess! Still one more keeper for the year so I'll take it.
I also found 2 Buffalo Nickels here, one a 1916 and a No Dater. I also pulled a total of 7 Wheats, 1 Merc and 1 Rosie. Clad was 23 Quarters, 23 Dimes, 2 Nickels and 43 Pennies.
Total Silver Finds were 7 Silver. They were 1 Barber Dime dated 1913-s, 2 Mercury Dimes dated 1938, 1944-d and 4 Roosevelt Dimes dated 1946-d,1957,1959-d and 1964-d. I dug 2 Buffalo Nickels and they are dated 1914-d (better Date and used Nic-A-Date Date Restorer to bring back the Date to find this out) and 1916. Too bad the 1914-d wasn't a high grader but I will take it anyways. I believe this is the 3rd 14-d Buffalo found now and when they start out in g-4 at $85.....I'll take everyone I come into contact with!
I also got 1 Indian Head Penny dated 1903. The 2 Sacagawea Dollars are dated 2000-p and 2000-d. For Token Type Items, there was a Paul Bunyan Center Brainerd, Minn. / Good Luck Souvenir Token, a Dream Catcher Token that reads on the front Dream Catcher / (reads on the back) great spirit whose voice I hear in the wind whose breath gives life to the world hear me I come to you as one of your many children I am small and weak I need your strength and wisdom may I walk in beauty. Neat Token I think! I also got a Good For 10c In Trade Token that is bifacial....meaning the same on both sides. For Wheats, I dug 22 of them. They are dated 17,17-s,18,18-d,19,19-d,29-d,36,37-d,41,41-d,44,44-d,45,45-d,(2)46,(2)46-d,(2)51-d and 58-d. For Misc. Items, I only pulled one Sterling Silver Pin with A A B on the top / K A X in the middle / and C S A on the bottom of it. The back reads Sterling with what appears to be an S with an Arrow going through it. The other item was part of a Cuff Link. Clad Totals were 36 Quarters, 42 Dimes, 2 Nickels and 66 Pennies. Well....that just about does it for this posting. Hope you enjoyed another of my posts and hope you all get out and get a few more goodies this upcoming weekend. Thanks for looking everyone and Good Luck and HH to you all!
