finds from Nebraska

Well I finally got settled in here in Nebraska, from Georgia, and man is it cold. I haven't been on line much so I probably missed all kinds of stuff. couldn't make it to the get together in Missouri, man that I wish I could have went, it must have been a blast. Well managed to get out and do some detecting here, most of the items were from the old fort crook part of the base, the quarter is a 1948D, a war nickel, merc, and rosey. the oldest wheat is 1910. both of the crosses are siver. The U.S. insignia not to sure about dont know if its a type of belt plate or what the back seems to be filled with pewter or something. all in all finds have been ok, but am having a blast.
take care and HH

I like the US insignia thing.Where at in Nebraska are ya? Im originally from a small town near Lincoln called Crete.Still have lots of relatives near there.Havent been back since 71.Good luck detecting:))

I retired from the Air Force and was stationed at Offutt at the time. I was space systems electronics tech back when all that was top secret. We developed the first satellite images so the building was inside of the hanger where the Nola Gay was constructed so we could not be "spotted". In those days it was all very secret so no one could wear any distinguishing badges, emblems, etc. I was always amazed to be in a top secret briefing of things I did not need to know and then told to forget it. Why tell me something I don't need to know then tell me to forget it? Ah, the Air Force is indeed interesting. However, they have done well by me. I was in Saigon in 68 when they used a lot of Agent Orange so am 70% disabled. The VA compensates us but takes away anything they give us from our retired pay. What we get compensation from our own retirement pay but then it is tax free up to the amount of the VA compensation. The Air Force has come to the rescue and if the disabilities are combat related which mine are then they restore what the VA takes away.

This is way off topic but if any of you that read this are veterans and are disabled and certified as being so by the VA then you can go to the Internet and look up CRSC. You must go through your branch service but if the disabilities are combat related then your offset will be restored. It is retroactive back several years and they restore the VA offset in one lump sum payment.

However, back to the Offutt and metal detecting. I found thousands of coins in the parks in Omaha back in the seventies. I think there are 105 parks in Omaha. I found an AU 1916D Dime in the park at Plattsmouth and a good one at Oneal, my first silver dollar in the little Bellevue park, and a 2 1/2 dollar gold coin in Hanscom park in Omaha.

Man in those days if you did not find 10 to 15 good coins in a hunt it was a bad day. The old parks were full of seated, bust, V Nickles, quarters, with some nice halves. I often wonder what a good detector like the Explorer would do in those old parks.

Have a great day,

Wow I wish things were like that today, hite that park in Plattsmouth found a 1960 rosey, and the small park in Bellevue I found about 10 wheats no silver though, I think alot of these parks have been re-done, Ive had my best luck on base at the Ft. crook area, Im thinking its ok to hunt since they sell metal detectors on base at the BX. Do you know if you can hunt the old Ft. Omaha, its a college now, and I would love to hunt the Fontanell forest area all kinds of stuff went on there. I am hoping to get a 1916D dime since all of the dimes ive found here were all D mint marked. Hopefully you left some stuff in the ground. LOL
Things are still the same on base alot of secret stuff around yet I have not been injured yet so wont get any disability. but its good to know the info that you passed along.
Take care and HH

When I was there we could get permission to hunt almost anywhere. The deal was a lot of places had very nice grass and wanted it to look as good after you hunted as it did before. Pinpointing and digging properly was a must.

The old parade ground should be full of goodies. I retired in 1980 so and have not been back so don't know what can and cannot be hunted now. It was amazing what crossing the river could do for older coins. Back in the early days a river was a major barrier so settlement on one side would be there for many years before it really moved to the other side. There were thousands of old homes and most people would let you hunt in Omaha. I did better hunting in Nebraska than any other place. The soil was nice and soft and few rocks. Man that was where a guy needed depth.

We had permission to hunt on base and they were remodeling some of the housing so we got to hunt those area. They would back the aircraft up back during the war before the housing was there and test fire the 50s into the hills where the house was so it was full of lead.

The trick at Offutt was to dodge the tornadoes. Man I thought it was bad in Oklahoma but Omaha is truly tornado alley. I am talking about big ugly tornadoes that make a grown man cry.
