finds from Saturday

small change

New member
Saturday I went to a park that was originally a fish hatchery. It still has a couple of ponds in it, one of which can be fished. Spent most of the time near a parking area between a restroom & picnic shelter building. Started out finding only clad for quite a while, but finally I found a wheat, then soon after the first Roosevelt, not far from a big sycamore tree. In some areas, the dirt suspiciously looked like it could be fill, so it was a bit tricky to figure out where would be the best chance of finding older stuff. After a while, a city cop came by, & I was lucky that he was friendly. I talked to him for a while. Turns out he used to do quite a bit of detecting in the area & still does a little, once in a while. He told me where fill dirt had been brought in in some areas of the park & also mentioned a couple of other places in town that I could try. Got back to searching again & took off the pro coil & put on the 6" excellerator to try to pick some good stuff out of the trashier spots up close to the picnic shelter. At the end of the day I had found 4 Roosevelts ('53d, '59d, & a pair of '64d's), 1940 &'46 Jeff Nickels, 10 Wheats, an Our Lady of the Snows Shrine medal, & what could be an old pocket watch. First I though it was an old stopwatch, but with the face gone, I can only guess. I started searching around 9:30 that morning & ended up staying until it was almost dark. I tried to get in as much searching as I could because I knew the weather forecast for Sunday was bad, & as it turned out, they were right. It rained off an on all day & I don't think I could have gotten enough search time in to make it worth going anywhere. It wasn't too bad of day & the 4 silver dimes made it worthwhile. I'd say good but not great if you weigh the time spent vs. what I took home. I was a bit suprised I didn't find any Mercury's. I know the fish hatchery was started there in the 20s, but I don't know when the land was turned over to the city & turned into a park. There was quite a bit of area, that I didn't cover so I will probably hit this place again at least once before the end of this spring.
