Finds from this weekend

JT in Virginia

New member
I found this old house that looked like it was about to be bulldozed so I got my detector and checked out the yard on Saturday. I found these 3 silver quarters in one hole. Nothing else there, so I tried another area near my house on Sunday and I found a penny that looks like 1898 but its in really bad shape.

What an amazing looking penny. Is it an Indian head or what? I thought wheatback's started in 1909, but that's a pretty amazing penny. Love the photos, and what kind of headphones are you using? Looks like Grey Ghost?

Hi Beachguy,
Its an Indian Head but its so badly pitted that its difficult to tell.
The date is 1898 I think. Its got a shield on the back so that matches the date according to this website http://www.coinfacts.com/

I was so excited when I found it. I'm new to relic hunting so this was really exciting for me. The headphones are Grey Ghost deep woods model with the switches inside the headphone. These headphones are great. They are lighter and much more comfortable that the Koss headphones I was using.

JT, that's great. I have the so-called good koss headphones, and the cable into the phones is shorting out. What a bummer, even though they have a warranty. What a pain in the butt. Do your headphones have a volume conotrol or not? You said the switches inside the headphones, but I'm not sure what switches? I'm definitly in the market for A more reliable set of phones, that won't short out, are loud enough, and the cord won't stretch out to about 12 feet long. I'm tird of this shit. I want something that's reasonable for our type of use here. (Gee Martha, where are my NERVE, pills when I want them.):(;) Patience, young grasshopper, patience. OK, but even doctors don't get enough patience, or is that patients.?:| I hope you get my drift here.

The headphones have a volume limiter switch but no separate volume control. Since we can adjust the volume on the Quattro itself, its not something you'll miss. They are very comfortable to wear all day and sound great. The switches are on the inside of one of the cups so they are protected. I also have the Koss QZ99 but they are too heavy and the Koss UR30 is too loose and slips off my head.

This may be looked at as another headphone endorsement and maybe it is, kinda. I recently acquired the most expensive headphones I've ever purchased, $115. They are the Sun Ray Pro-gold. They have been used about 10 times up to 6 hours a day recently in southern New Mexico along the Mexican border close to Poncho Villa state park. I have learned my lesson about using better headphones than the $30 ones I use to wear.
On a previous posting I mentioned that incessant noise from high trash areas was just about driving me nuts, using the old $30 headsets. With the new headphones the sound level can be adjusted down to just have an audible and still give a high quality target sound. What a wonderful difference in tolerating those incessant high trash sounds. I suspect many experienced Quattro users already knew this.
The new headphones fit good, have individual volumn control and doesn't have a 12' cord. I would buy then again.

Hi guys, JT, I like your photos and the coins you found look great! Even the oldie! Just a question also on the head phones, you mentioned you had Koss head phones and went with the Grey Ghost. I've never seen the Grey Ghost here. I use the UR30 Koss phones and have been very happy with them. But I think mine are playing up too sometimes, where the sound drops off, then comes back. I don't know what's causing it. Could it be where the end socket that goes into the top of the Quattro is making intermiten contact? Or is it that the headphones are shorting out? It's got me wondering, as I always detect with head phones on. I can't stand detecting without them. So they've had a lot of use. It just might be time to get a new pair, and the Grey Ghost seems to be almost everyone's cup of tea. What do you reckon?
Golden:)

Hi Golden, I have to say that of all the headphones I've tried, the Grey Ghost headphones are the most comfortable for me. They are also the most expensive ones I purchased too. They are very well-made so I think they're worth it :)

Golden. You know I'm having trouble with the "top of the line" Koss pair I bought from Kellyco. They're fine, except one of the sides is shorting out, and when I "wiggled", the part of the wire that's right next to the phone itself, it would go in and out, so that seems to be where the short or "break" in the wire is. I called Koss, and they said they're "lifetime warrentied", so "send em in", with a check for 6 bucks, and it's a "done deal". Well, I havn't wanted to part with them yet, till I get my other "cheepies" reparied, so I'm waiting to do it, but the other problem I have is the "curly" cord stretches out to about 10 feet long. What a bummer. Dragging the cord along the ground as I detect. Not my idea of a good time. I want someting more functional than that, so I'm in the market too. I noticed that the "infamous", and I know he'll kill me for saying that, but, Mike, from Virginia Beach recommends the Grey Ghost, black widdows. I'm concerned on all of this of the volume control, if any. Let's face it, we need to be able to "crank it up" enough to suit our needs, depending on our hearing status. Ok, I'm done preaching and bitching. What's the best thing to do? Let me know if you, or anyone else knows? Marc Trainor.

P.S. Mike, you know I'm not building you up to be "a god", but you know I respect you tremendously in the field of metal detecting. Please take what I say as a compliment.:|

Jw, are you saying that these Sun Ray's won't do the infamous: "cord stretch out thing"???? I've had tremoundous trouble with that on my Koss pair. Sounds like your very happy with them, so I'm thinking: "either the Grey Ghost or the one's you have". I know, anyone other than an avid detectorist might think "were nuts", but when your out there for "hours at a time", it really makes a difference to have something that won't drive you nuts. Thanks for the post. Marc Trainor.

Marc, I've had no cord stretch problems with the SunRay Pro-Gold headphones. I had several 6 hours days wearing them last week on the Mexican border and I would buy them again. They have individual volume control and are over the ear style. If I need to listen closely for rattlesnakes or an illegal approaching me then one ear cup is slipped back and it is still confortable. I was amazed that it wasn't that hard to adapt to listening to just one ear cup. I know what you are talking about with cord stretch being a nuasance. I have Koss TD-80 and QZ5 headsets and both have given me cord stretch problems. They are good headsets, but are not really the best for our hobby.

Thanks JJ. You know, I probably never thought of the rattlesnake thing. We have em here too in San Diego, CA. I almost stepped on one about a year ago, and I'd love to go over our border too and hunt, but I'm too chicken as of yet. I have some Hispanic friends that are totally bi-lingual and stuff, but I'm more afraid of the federales and the banditos., or like you said some illegals that want you or your stuff. Your a pretty brave man. It sounds very interesting being near Pancho Villa Park. I heard he hid a lot of his gold somewhere along the border or turned it into artifacts and put them in churches so they appeared to be sacred and no one would mess with them. I'm not sure about all that, but it's kind of an interesting story. At any rate, your phones sound like a real set of keepers. I love the fact they don't stretch out and you have the volume nob's. I need to save some more bucks, but I'll certainly consider them when I buy a new pair. As soon as I can do that, I'm gonna just keep my Koss ones for an emergency spare, I believe. Thanks again, Marc.

Hi guys, i have the same problem i have the Koss QZ99 would be a good headphone if you didn't need to always adjust them, the bloody muffs slide up and down like they were attached to a block of ice and i also have the Koss TD/80 the one thing wrong with them is that they have no volume control, in case anyone else has Koss phones they have a lifetime warranty so if they bugger up you can always get them fixed for free.
Being in Australia no one here stocks the Gray ghost line which i believe after reading all the reports are the best headphones for the detectors so i will have to find away to import them from the U.S.A
