All I can say is WOW! Talk about covering some ground! My hunting buddy took me to a honey hole- coins right on the surface! I hunted iron mask -15 for about an hour, sens at 26 manual, and didn't have any problem telling the coins from trash. I just wonder how the deep ones sound. I got tired of listening so hard and went to my coin program and sens at 24 auto. It was like a competition hunt! Coins at or just below the surface. About a dozen quarters, 4- 100 yen coins ($4.00) 2-50 yen coins, dimes, nickels and several 10 yens. I figure about $10.00 or so- and it was fun! No trouble pinpointing either. Just got a repeatable signal and moved back until it faded- Coin right in front of the tip of the coil!
Do the deepies still sound loud and clear?

What should

Hi Jim,
I gather you are detecting in Japan, and since I travel there from time to time, wondering what the laws say about detecting. Perhaps you are hunting on base? Do you know anything about rules for hunting parks, fields, etc?
Thanks,
Jim in MN

I work with a lot of Japanese Nationals, and they don't think there are any restrictions, as long as you are responsible. A few folks have stopped and talked to me, and I show them my inevitable pocketful of pulltabs, screwcaps and foil and they seem happy I'm cleaning up the parks. I cut a plug, and use a washcolth to put my dirt on. Once I find the coin I pour the dirt back in from the washcloth and fold the plug back over the hole- nice and neat.
I've only been detecting here for a couple of weeks. I hunt the base, local soccer fields and parks. Most Japanese parks around here dont have trashcans, so I find alot of buried soda cans and foil. The alloys in Japanese coins seem very poor, the 100 and 50 yen coins read below pulltabs. The 10 yen reads near american quarter, and the aluminum 1 yen reads close to silver too. It's great detecting in a country with $1 and $5 coins!
Happy hunting!
