First beach trip

Well my first trip was ineresting to say the least lol. You guys were right, @*&%holes and idiots all in one day, the first lot was a group of drunks that turned up and interupted my solitude after about an hour of mding in peace, 4 of them, armed with wine and and super strength lager. They were very interested in my ace, and how much it cost, asking if they could have a go. They were my age, around 26. i knew one of them, a bad lot, thieves and druggys. I told them a pack of lies saying that it cost

I was wondering if you got to the beach Chris.
The curious ones seem to always find me at the
beach too. Headphones sometimes help. I
usually just slow way down and don't dig anything
while they are still there. They eventually get bored
and leave. Either that or you could move off far from
them. Usually people like that are too lazy to follow you.
Hope you are thinking about getting a good scoop.
At least you now know what kind of conditions you will be
digging in. Don't dig with your hands too by the way.
You can get into some real nasty stuff digging.
For the beach I use a gallon antifreeze bottle. Just cut
off the top and put holes in the bottom to drain sand and
water. Cut a couple of slits and put it on your belt.
I don't waste much time with coins and trash and just throw
them in there and sort it out later. Might want to get some sort
of screw top container for the suspected good finds.
Platinum band at 4"...hmmm. Wouldn't worry too much about that.
You would have found it if your coil went over it unless you had it
discriminated out. Glad you got out and am sure you will know a
little more next time out. Didn't see your pictures by the way.

That sounds like one of my MD run ins. I always seem to meet "interesting" folks in the field. Glad you are representing the hobby properly. How someone tosses junk back onto a nice beach is beyond me.

Chris

Sounds like you had a good time overall. You handled the situations well. I try to stay away from the yobbos, and disengage myself from any conversation as quickly as possible.
Removing the rubbish is sensible (as you pointed out) as well as doing the right thing. Unfortunately, you run into other detectorists who smugly show their finds. It doesn't bother
me as I know that I have either found stuff as good or better, or if not, I will "tomorrow". A solid button-down pocket on your shirt is good for rings, and as Gene suggested, a large
container hooked on your belt for other stuff, or any other combination that suits you and your style. Good Luck & HH.

Hi gene, yeah it was a nice trip minus the undesireables, but i suppose theyre going to be interested with such dull lives. Yes after my first outing im definitely going to invest in a scoop, i was using the girlfriends collander (she was quite surprised to see it covered in sand lol), and a half broken plastic trowel lol. I know what you mean about the nasty stuff, its quite easy to think your digging a coin, only to find a mashed up can 2" down, nasty cuts and infections. Will try the anti freeze mod for sure. i knew the ace wouldve picked up that ring, but fair play to him, i dont want bad feelings towards me when i find the big one (im thinking big) lol. i dont know why my pics didnt load up, i can view them when i click on the url. Anyway, take care gene and will post again soon, no doubt in need of your experience lol.
Thanks again
chris

If I saw the lady throw the trash item down I would have gone over and picked up the trash and put it with my junk stuff and told her that is what hurts this hobby put my head phones back on and continued my detecting...of course with a smug smile on my face!

i hate those beach people too that don't mind their self. my first hunt at my local beach with my ace some people are just that annoying and they think i can't hear them with my headphones on. one person was like dad what is he doing. he is metal detecting. why to find metal objects in the ground. why would he do that well some people leave behind things of value. another person with his wife was like look at what he is doing he is using a metal detector to find things just watch at what he is doing. when people just watch or get annoying i will just stop detecting if i find a target i will slow down over it they will get bored watching. and i hate people that throw the trash back on the beach. metal detecting helps clean the beach.

What bugs me the most is the house apes that swarm around me asking a ton of dumb questions, standing right in my way, trying to help me dig, or swiping a coin I've just located as if they found it. Has one little brat trying to stomp on my coil with his foot. He was with his grand dad who seemed to think his little darling's actions were funny. I told him his brat was too small to slap up side of the head but that he wasn't. He snatched up his brat and left.

At least now you have an idea of what to expect at the beach Chris.
Yeah, get a good scoop and it will last a long time. Stainless would be
my choice as they are really tough and don't rust. Am looking forward
to Chapter 2 of your beach experience. Is this a saltwater beach you
are hunting Chris ? Never did ask you. HH Gene

go to the thrift store and get a shirt that says bomb squad, they will leave you alone.

hi guys, im really puzzled as to what this is? i was detecting a month or so ago and while i was sweeping, i came across this item and havent a clue what it is, it isnt metal, i think its glass, but it has obviously uniform structure. hope someone can help.
Thanks guys. Oasis

It takes all kinds to make this old world, I guess. Education is wonderful when people sincerely want to learn something. When they are drunk or stupid, it doesn't take long to get on your nerves. Why this lady and her husband would not pick up their trash and avoid having to sort through it again is beyond me. I like to leave the area I search cleaner than I found it for the next person who metal detects there. The idea of using an antifreeze bottle or even a bleach bottle with maybe some hardware cloth taped to the bottom is interesting and would do until you could decide if you want to buy a nice scoop and pursue beach hunting. Uncle Willy, you are right!! It was funny to the old Grandpa about the young child trying to stomp your coil until you let him know he was responsible for the child and would suffer the consequences of allowing him to act up. An attitude adjustment sure does work wonders. Happy hunting, Chris.
