First Big Silver

Hi everyone, about two weeks ago I was driving through a local park and small block building at the edge of the woods caught my eye. About 30 yards to the right of it I could see where the roof of an old picnic shelter had collapsed onto the concrete slab that made up the base of the shelter. There was no parking near this wooded area being that the shelter and it's surroundings had not been maintained for what appears to be a decent number of years.

Today we headed for the park and found the nearest parking to this closed down grove. After a pretty short hike through the woods and we were at the site. I was using my 10.5 MF coil which is my least favorite of my two large coils. I probably have 24 hours or more on this coil but I just seem to find more with the HF coil. Every now and then I tell myself that I'm going to use this coil for the entire day. Today was one of those days.

After 10 minutes of hunting I finally had my first signal that I felt I should dig. I dug down about 3 inches and saw a little bit of silver but wasn't sure that I had a coin. If it was a coin I was expecting it to be a silver quarter. The coin felt heavy and a little bigger than a quarter. I lightly pushed some of the dirt off of it and could see the liberty bell. I was in disbelief that this was a half dollar.

It ended up being a 1955 Franklin Half! I was so excited because I've never found a half before. We spent about another hour or so there and I ended up finding a pocket spill with a 67 quarter, two dimes from the 90's and a penny. Those were the only other coins that we found in the amount of time that we had spent there. This area was almost a little too grown over to detect so I would expect that we won't go back until fall unless I can make some time to go back this week.

Excellent first half! Congratulations! :clapping:

And congratulations on trying something relatively new (to you). That MF coil can be your friend.
And you might find it easier to hunt with your 6" MF in brushy areas. It will fit places that the big one won't, won't snag on every little stickup, and can run hotter than a big coil so it will see nearly as deep.

Congratulations. Coils are like detectors, you need to find something good with them before you'll start having confidence in them.

Congrats on the Franklin! I got my first one 2 months ago. Really nice feeling to see thta big silver in the hole.

Nice big silver, Congrats on the Franklin Half !! I also have the 10.5 MF DD and I am trying to use it more and more. I really wish I had gotten the HF 10.5 DD because I also like the HF coils the best and seem to find more with them. I am currently saving for one !!

Good stuff! Congrats on the silver half. HH Randy

Congrats on that great Franklin! I just found my first Walker a few weeks back and the Franklin is now on my "To Find" List. Here is a suggestion on getting that stain out. Line a small jar or bowl with aluminium foil and put a couple of tablespoons of baking soda on top. Boil some water and pour it directly into the jar with the foil. Presto! Your Big New Franklin will be stain free!!!
