First Day With My New SE

Hi,
I got my SE two weeks ago and went out that next day at a local park. I left mine in factory presets and found a Mercury dime and an Indian Head penny. I did not dig any iffy signals. I am going to leave mine in factory and play around the parks a while before hitting the woods and fields. I really liked my first trip out but had problems pinpointing. The guys here helped me a great deal with that issue...now if the cold would just go away! I will offer this...take your time and go slowly, I would leave it in the factory presets for a few times out....What do I know, I am new at it too..

I agree with digitrich on the sunray 8" coil. It has great depth and is very effective in medium trash areas,:pulltab: Also, you will need a 5" coil for really trashy areas in your arsenal. Happy Hunting Grounds,

Run the detector in factory presets until you have some time with it to understand it. Another thing I will tell everyone is that a setting that works for one may not work for you in other parts of the country, so those that try to copy others setting may not work either. The best is to run factory preset and maybe raise or lower the sensitivity so you have a stable threshold while holding the coil still. Now once you get to know what the Explorer is telling you then you can go to other settings and tweak it to work the best for you and your areas.
Even here our 2 best hunters with the Explorer run different settings and they both do good as this is how they understand the Explorer, so like I say trying to copy another's setting may or may not work and what works for you may not work for others. Start in factory presets and learn what you can as sometime the best finds are found while in factory presets.

I also agree with what you say except for the gain. The SE has the gain preset at 8 instead of 5 like the older explorers. I would suggest lowering it to 5 or 6 until he gets use to the sounds.

I think you'll have better luck with the 8" or 5" coil until you've put some time in on the Explorer. Once you've learned the tones well I think your go to coil will be the stock 10" coil, even in the trash. You'll get a little frustrated at first but the more you use the Explorer the better it gets. Just be patient and have fun as you learn the Explorer.

Hello Randynorthridgeca, Good point:thumbup: I still use the EX II, and run mine at 10:detecting: After reviewing the VHS tape that came with my EX-II it was recommended to run the gain at 10 after getting use to the detector. Happy Hunting Grounds,

Savage.
