Boy where do I start.
My mail typically comes between 10:30 & 11:30 on Saturday's. As I anxiously awaited my new coil to arrive, finally at 12:25 I could see the mail girl coming up the street. She usually drops of letters and then gets back in her little truck and drives to any houses that have packages. I watched her get back in her truck and all of the sudden she did a u-turn and headed off in the other direction!! The USPS site showed "Out For Delivery" so I knew it had to be on her truck but she was done delivering in our part of the neighborhood. I ran down to my truck and drove after her. I caught up with her down the road stopped ironically at the driveway of the empty old 1800's house that we have been detecting at and one of the places that I really wanted to try the Digger coil on. I walked up to her truck and politely asked if she had a Priority Mail package for me. Her face kind of went blank as she looked beside her and said "I'm sorry!!! I forgot all about putting this on the truck this morning". I laughed and said no problem and we were off to an old home site about 10 miles away that my brother (Hotrod53) hunted a few nights ago.
He had hunted this place about 8 years ago and found a flying eagle cent some indians and sliver. The other night he found two more indians and six wheats. He's been doing really well lately so we weren't sure what the chances of us finding anything would be although he feels that the place still has potential. It's pretty rough there right now with a lot of brush around but there are some semi open areas. About 45 minutes after we got there I had my first coin with the Digger coil, a 1965 dime, of course missing silver by a year which happens to me all of the time. I also found a big flat button. My Mom had a 1940 something wheat at that point also. I went off into the woods to an area where my Mom said there used to be a chicken coup. There was a lot of slate back there and some old broken crocks. I wasn't getting many hits and all of the sudden I noticed about a 4' to my left was a big 6' black snake moving his head around quickly with his tongue going in an out like he was ready to strike. I know they can bite and they are not venomous but I let out a quick whoa!! and bolted off in the opposite direction and almost ran right into a tree. I got back out to where my Mom was and I know she's terrified of snakes so I told her what I just seen and she said "I'm ready to go!" Seems like right at the beginning or our prime detecting season I always run into a snake or two. Last year it was two within an hour in a wooded area of a local park.
We came back to the old 1800's house that we've been saying we've nearly hunted out. This is the same place that I met up with the mail girl to intercept my new coil a little earlier. I texted my brother and said "I'm headed to the proving ground for the 6" Digger coil." I really wanted to see what this coil would find being that we've used 5 different coils at this site and coins are really few and far between. Two weeks ago were the last notable finds for me at this place. A 1910 Barber and an 1874 Indian and they were the only two coins that I found that day. We were there for about an hour and a half today and I found a 1934 wheat and my Mom found 3 coins prior to 68 but none were wheats. After taking a break for dinner I went back by myself and within 10 minutes had a 1942 wheat. About an hour later I had a 40-42 that was a fairly strong signal. I dug down about 5 inches and has was pulling dirt out with my hand and going across it with my Pro Pointer and out fell a nickel. I thought it was really strange that this coil ID'd the nickel as a 40-42 and from what I've read about that coil, it doesn't do as well with nickels as it does with copper and silver. The nickel seemed smooth and I couldn't feel Monticello on it or see Jefferson face when I rubbed it. I kept detecting but I really wanted to see the coin because I thought it may be the first buffalo from this site. Finally I stopped and started to rub it with my gloves and as I started to get more of the dirt off I wasn't recognizing any part of this nickel. All of the sudden I could see some of the detail and for a second thought it might be a token. Then it looks kind of like a Barber and I started thinking this might be a V nickel which I have never found before. When I flipped it over I rubbed it one time and I could see the V perfectly. It turned out o be a 1900 V nickel....my very first!!!!
Now I have no idea why that ID'd the way it did because after I got the dirt off of it I swiped it over the coil and it was bouncing between 10 & 12 but it was mainly a12 like I would have expected it to be. I swiped the hole again and there was no signal. I'm not sure if it was the orientation in the hole but a V nickel was that last thing that I was expecting while digging. I'm sure I've been over that same area with other coils and my Mom and Hotrod53 have also been through there. It's hard to say if it was the Digger coil or just luck that I went over that area in the right direction to pick it up but at any rate, I was happy to find my first V nickel!
I think it's a little too soon for me to share my thoughts on the coil but I will say that it really sounds off strongly when you find something. I had some nice solid signals with valid coin ID's that sounded coin size but I dug a rusted piece of metal that looked like an old bolt. That happened about 4 or 5 times today. Not sure what to think about that yet. Once I use this for a little while I'll post my thoughts but I want to get better acquainted with it before I do that. It found 4 coins on a site that have been missed by countless hours of detecting so I'm happy about that.
