first detector for my 10 year old

My 10 year old son would like a metal detector for Christmas. This hobby is completely foreign to me, so can someone give me a little guidance here? I do not want to buy anything too cheap, like nothing off of Walmart's shelf, but I guess I don't even know what constitutes "too cheap" or "mid-range" as far as decent quality goes. Can I get him something decent for less than $ 300.00? Any suggestions? Was looking at Bounty Hunters, am I on the right track there? Thanks so much!

for less than or near $300. I am partial to Tesoros because they will fix your machine for free forever!!!! Anyway, a Silver umax would be excellant. Very light weight, goes pretty deep, I have found quarters at 7" with mine. It is very easy to use, pinpoints well. It sells new for $240. Garrett has 2 new machines out, the ace 150 and 250. 150 sells for about $143 and 250 selles for $199. I hear alot of good things about the 250. They dont have the lifetime warranty though. Tesoros have very good resale value as well. For $300 I would say get a tesoro silver umax, a nice set of headphones and a lesche digger.

Tesoro Silver u/max would be an excellent choice. Lifetime warranty and easy to use. Not a toy either. Our #1 Tesoro seller for many years has been the Silver series. Last year we awarded Tesoro "Detector of the Decade" for their Silver series. Excellent starter unit that many adults and advanced Detectorists use. Give me a call if you need any questions answered. I agree with david, It's a great detector for the money, You wouldn't belive the things my wife has found with this mechine.

I can give you two choices- a Tesoro Compadre or the new Garrett Ace 250 which is one hot little machine, is easy to learn and use and has a display that gives all the info you need such as coin ID and depth of coin plus tone ID that gives a different sound for different targets, and it's bright yellow and a snazzy looking machine. Kellyco has them discounted to $199. Good luck.

lower priced detectors. I have a Grandson that will be 10 next spring and the 250 is what I'll probably start him on. For $200 street price nothing beats it. Be sure and buy him a decent set of headphones made for detecting to go with it. You can find outstanding honest dealers that sponsor this site that will take of your needs.
