First few day's with the Deus.

Hey all I just wanted to share my experience with the Deus I hope that it may help someone in the future. I have used many different machines most of the last 5/6 years the E trac has been my go-to it along with all of the other machines you just run as much sens and as little disc as you can stand and go looking for the deep stuff. I find the Deus to be very different in that regard the first few short hunts were terrible almost no coins no depth just big shallow trash I felt like a first timer so I decided back to basics I went to a schoolyard that was fairly free of park-like trash and set the machine on basic 1 and just cruised along things where already way better just getting back to the basics was huge. so the last few days when I get to a spot I bury a coin dime at 6 or quarter at 8 and then get a good ground balance and tune the machine to get the best signal this tuning is not like I'm used to, thanks to all of the great advice on this forum it is not difficult either I'm always surprised by how a few adjustments to the machine can take the faintest whisper and make it bang. Things are coming right along and my confidence is growing by the hour I am digging many more coins and much less trash nothing silver or really deep yep but I am hearing more of deeper stuff and I'm sure it's only a matter of time before the goodies show up. Thanks for all of the advice. Happy Hunting.

The idea of testing with buried coins and making adjustments is a good one. Some will say that the Deus reacts differently to freshly buried targets in disturbed soil compared to those in the wild. That may be the case but your process is still a good way to start and to learn the interactions of the various settings.

There is little consensus on how to run a Deus, so just keep on learning. You may teach the rest of us a thing or two.

Good to hear you are getting to grips with the Deus.
You mentioned a faint whisper, this can be an advantage because it gives you an audio perception of depth, while shallow targets will be loud.
The Audio response setting can be used to great advantage, and if set correctly allows you to "Cherry pick" the deep targets based on their faint audio sound.

The Deus has so many dimensions, and there is a setting to suit everyone.
Last week I had a guy new to the Deus and was using Basic 1, he had difficulties identifying Iron, I suggested he introduced some Iron tone so he could hear the iron, now he is up and running. Who would think hearing Iron was the best way to not dig it.

Thanks guys. Hey Gary thank you for all of the wonderful info you put out there. The fog is beginning to lift I am loving this little wonder it is so light and fast that it is a real pleasure to use however I have to change my hunting style which is fine. I know I am just scratching the surface with this magic wand. Thanks guys

Gary, loved your "iron" comment, my laugh for the day. I have a settings question. A guy I know who's had a deus since it was first introduced told me that its not so important the tones setting that you run as it is that you run the same setting all the the time so as to learn the tones. The first tiime I took the Deus out was a relic hunt and I could see why folks in the UK like full tones. However in the states unfortunately modern trash is the 800 lb gorilla so if you choose to concentrate on these spots, do you think a full tones setting as opposed to break tones will yield more finds in the long run at the expense of perhaps always digging more trash or would you still adjust your setting to the site or your mood for the day? Just some Deus theory. thanks PT.

Good question, that's really good advice regarding using the same tones all the time, experiment and choose your preferred tones.
I fully understand about the Gorilla, the problem is when you reject or assign a tone to an unwanted target, is it in air or in the ground, as the target ID can change depending on several things.
Depth
Mineralisation
Other targets in the proximity
Target orientation in the ground

So try to keep in mind these points, this is why I mentioned earlier about cherry picking faint sounds, there is a good chance they will be deeper and possibly older.

Full tone is a great setting for deep silver, listen out for a soft faint high tone.
I am sure there are guys in the US with more park or yard hunting experience than me, perhaps that can offer some good tips.

Thanks Gary, I'm not really a dig all guy but I believe if you pass the "mixed tones" in the really heavy trash you're leaving some of the good stuff behind especially with bottle caps that mask tones so well.

I bought my Deus 3 years ago - I've used it on more than 95% of my hunts since the day I got it !

Good luck with your new Deus ! :detecting:

Congrats on the new machine its a beast if you take the time to learn it. You are off to a good start.
