First field test on the 11" Pro coil at relic-hunting :minelab: :csflag:

ihuntrelics!

New member
I finally recieved my new coil yesterday so I took it for a spin last night in the woods and weedy fields. Well first thing I have to say is that this coil was NOT designed for the relic-hunter unless he just hunts freshly mowed yards and parks. If I had a $ for every time it hung up on sticks, weeds ,stubble, rocks, stumps, vines etc.etc.etc.. I would be rich just from last nights hunt!!!! As far as the weight issue it is definately lighter. As far as the balance, yes it's improved also. As far as the pinpointing and stability is concerned, yes there's a big improvement over the slimline coil ( which really isn't saying much ). My slimline coil falses too much for me!!! Everytime you bump it or are hunting in damp conditions it is aggravating to say the least. The new coil really loves them 'ole shotgun shells ( well I guess all the coils do!! ). We'll to keep this coil in my arsenal I will have to modify the bottom with some very thin acrylic plastic sheeting to cover up all those open spots that can't seem to go over anything without grabbing it. Well here's the results from my little hunt....seven various sized musket balls of which two has teeth marks, one dropped .52 cal. Smith carbine and a fired .577 or .58 cal. Gardner. Thanks for looking and HH!!

Other than that, I find the new coil a great improvement over the previous coils. Yes, coils.
Now I would like to see a webbed DD in say a 5X10.

I've been thinking about that too. I was thinking this coil is almost designed for the beach where snags don't matter. I was also wondering what the miminum number one would need to sell to recoup the cost of getting one manufactured (and something clear or translucent would be cool)..

Hell, Garrett's have had solid coils for ever. If the coil were elliptical, it wouldn't snag so quick. But being that slim and round, it leads the stubble Right into the coil.

Ralph (Sunray) used to make a solid cover for the X12 (don't know if he still does or not) and Minelab could do the same thing if they just would. This is the very thing that I was wondering about from the beginning but I was thinking more along the lines of packed dirt & sand. Digitritch commented about even grass hanging up somewhat. A solid cover is going to make pinpointing a little tougher though--unless you come off the toe or heel.---MAN--if it isn't one thing it's another.

SCOTT----Do you think we will have that kind of problem as you described with the SEF 10X12 (by the design of the coil)?----Well my lightweight is supposed to get here Tuesday so I'm going to give it my best shot. The other features about the Minelab coil does seem to sound very favorable (from early reports).-----Del

the main problem with the Pro coil is the open holes in the bottom of the coil where it's usually flat( I'm talking about these areas here ) and the stiffners that make an X is what is catching on everything. I am waiting on the SEF 12 X 15 coil and we'll soon know if it will be as prone to hang-ups. If you click on the pic you can see what areas I have circled in red.

GOTTCHA SCOTT----Didn't Minelab or field testers realize/visualize this problem before it gets to the consumers?---Well, MAYBE they will come out with a solid cover for you relic hunters--I sure hope so.---For that kind of money-you shouldn't have to "improvise".----Del
