First hunt of the year (sort of), got one nice keeper to show for it.

Got out for my first real hunt of the year today. I say this because I went out yesterday too, but it was to try to locate a wedding ring for somebody.

First the ring story..Apparently somebody lost their wedding ring while throwing leaves doing spring cleanup. I figured it would be easy, until I saw the terrain involved, namely a 60 degree slope. Their yard backed up to a bluff overlooking the river, and the ring went over the edge. Searched the first 10 feet or so of the slope before it got too dark to continue safely. Slid about 5 feet down on my butt a few times losing my footing. May have another crack at it some other day and work my way farther down, I bet the thing rolled down the hill a ways.

In any event, I got out today to a site I had worked a bit last year and tried a different part.
Produced a little bit of trash, and a very nice 1872 indian head. I got another example of this semi-key date last year, but this one is WAY nicer. I'm hoping there's a seated hiding there somewhere after pulling a few older indians.

Anyhow, I got out my macro lens and took a few good shots of it, enjoy.

Even if I hadn't found a damn thing, it would have been worth it just to get out.

Nice find, Chris!

We'll have to get out this spring.

Must have been in ground that is well sheltered from the rain. Coppers up here usually get eaten away by the acid in the soils and in the rain. I found a 1881 Indian last Saturday and you can barely make out the Indian and the date. In fact I'm not even sure it is a 1881 and the 3 rd is so far gone that the bottom part of it is just about gone so it could be a 1891 too.

Anyway you are very lucky to find that date is such a fine state of preservation. If I were you I would hunt that area very heavily any silver you find there is likely to look almost like it did the day it was lost.

Very nice coin, Chris, and kudos on the great photos - up close and personal! Your IH should clean up real well. Congrats, and good luck locating the ring. Johnny

"...I saw that seated you posted."

Which one, the dime or the quarter? :)

I'm free every other weekend pretty much. (Have my kids on the other weekends--though I can do short (1-2h) hunts on those weekends.)

Definitely a keeper !!!!!! Beautiful coin my friend!!!!
