First hunt with SE

Well, I had no problem finding and recovering targets...although relatively shallow...3-4 inches. Here's a problem I had. Whenever I found a target, I checked it from several directions. The tones would change but not the numbers on the screen or the crosshairs position. That is until I stopped the coil, moved it away from the target until the threshold would return...then go back to the target. Is that normal? Fer/Con numbers don't quickly change from target to target? I know I could have recovered the things I found in a tenth of the time with my other detector and I guess that's one thing that's so frustrating when learning the Explorer as a new machine. Thanks, Ray.

Sometimes the numbers will freeze until the threshold returns. You may think this is a bad thing right now but after you learn the tones well, it won't bother you any. Now I think the smartfind does a little better as far as updating compared to the digital screen but I don't know about how the SE does in this. Another thing that causes the screen freeze is a higher level of discrimination, however the tones still will report a signal. A higher level of iron present can cause the screen freeze also. There was one guy that sold his Explorer because of this but the Explorer is not like any other detector out there, patience my friend, a little wiggle over the signal will usually give a screen reading.
