First hunt with the G2. First impressions.

The 5 " coil should get here on Thursday. I am anxious to try it out in all metal . I know it will kill in the disc mode. Yesterday the 11 inch coil was on average 4-6 It was picking stuff out of the trash that no one else could get because of the trash in the ground. When I say that the park was trashy I do not mena that the park had trash on top of the ground. They have a grounds crew that grooms this park daily. Its a gorgeous park. It was quite amazing to actually see this detector performing in a trashy situation. HEaded out again today to another one of my favorite parks . Sonny

what kind of depth on coins ARE you seeing in the parks?..on average!

The coins that I found yesterday ranged in depth anywhere from lying on the surface to 6". Keep in mind though that even the 6" coins were ringing out loud and clear, so I'm sure that many even deeper coins would have been audible had I had my coil over them. I had to turn my headphones down because the G2 was screaming so loud. The play areas were covered with rock instead of wood chips. Some of these areas were only 2" deep, but others were 8"-10" deep. There were a couple of times that I found coins that, according to the depth indicator, were 7-8" deep, but by the time I dug down to where the coin was supposed to be, it had moved deeper (fallen down in between more rocks). Since they were running from me that way I can't accurately say how deep they were when I originally locked onto the targets. Those targets were not fun to find! Thank goodness for pinpointing probes!

At first it was a concern to me, but I really don't see depth as an issue with the G2 any more. You'll find the stuff that coils have passed over for years. Almost all of the coins I found yesterday (in the grass) had been in that ground for quite a while. Even in the play areas I found coins that were surrounded by trash. They had obviously been there a while too. So, don't worry about depth. Think about the screening ability of the G2. It can make tons of the garbage nearly invisible. We had fun yesterday playing with the Disc settings. We would set the Disc high, then walk in silence through all of the trash. Then high tones would scream at us, we would dig, and put another coin in our bag. I just cannot wait to hit some old home sites with this thing.

Although not cheap, nor a toy. I love the the setup of the G2. Larger DD coil and the F75 like shaft setup. It really seems like a polished unit. Once the tax check comes in im going to spring for one. I know it will pay for itself before the summer is out.

Well I will let him use it long enough to decide he will have to have one. The G2 kicked it in the park today. !!!
You know Sonny, as trashed as that ground at the park was, we did very well with the 11" coil. The 5" will have to improve our results significantly. I guess that I'll start saving my clad for one. Yesterday was the start of my savings. Not a bad start, actually!

Sonny1965 just called from a park, and he is digging dimes at 7 inches through the trash!!!! That's not bad! He said that he will post a detailed report this evening. He's heading to a different (more trashy) park right now. He's getting the coins like crazy.

I mostly hunt saltwater beaches with my Excal but also hunt parks, old homesites and what have you. Sounds like I will enjoy this machine, I have a few areas loaded with small iron trash....BTW, Bart will give you a great deal. HH

Awesome. You'll love it! And yes, Bart will give you a good deal!

outstanding!..parks here in new england have 350 to 400 years of of "crap" in 'em
outrageous performance!..looks like we got a "ringer" on our hands!..dave and crew have scored again!

Sonny and I are both still on the 11". Sonny will be using the 5" soon also. I plan on cashing in some gold finds to get the 5" soon.

Guys, some great stuff in this thread.

tabman, earlier on, you said you hit a 9" dime? WOW.

Also, lots are raving about how this thing finds coins in trash. Are you all disc-ing out the trash completely, so that ALL you hear are high-tone coins, or are you having to separate subtle, short high tones out from the predominant iron grunts? Reason I ask is, my F70 iron falses with high tones CONSTANTLY. If I dug every high tone I hear amongst the iron, I'd dig nothing but a bunch of corroded, rusty nails that were falsing on me. Can someone explain how you are picking the good stuff out of the trash without digging a million iron falses? How does a coin hidden amongst trash SOUND on these machines? What clues you in that there is a coin there, amongst the trash?

Steve

If all things are equal, the G2 and the Gold Bug Pro give off the same signals to good targets in, around, under trash. The audio on the GB is sharp, and does not false from what I can tell. My tests have shown that the GB can pick out good targets next to iron and even under the iron / trash.

Today I found a quarter that was under a pull tab, the pull tab was seen in the 60's VDI range and the quarter screamed at me with a higher / louder tone with a VDI of 87 / 88 on the VDI. All this was in DISC mode with gain at 80, DISC at 40 and ground balanced in the 60's. The pull tab was 5" down, the coin was an inch deeper. Oh, and I was using the F5 stock coil on my GB. The VDI was jumping all over the place from 62 - 88, with the 87 / 88 reading the tone / audio stood out, so I knew there was a good coin or a possible silver ring there.

I have not had the chance to use a G2, but based on what I have seen and read, and based on the fact that the G2 is really a Gold Bug both detectors should have the same characteristics and perform the same way. Even with the ID numbers, 88 for a quarter, 58 for a nickel, 82 / 83 for a penny / dime.

I guess I need to get a G2 to confirm all this, unless someone has both detectors and can pipe in here.

outstanding question!.steve!
you beat me to it!..definitely want to know as well!
from all indications, seems like an "outrageous" coin sniffer!
i have some thoughts on this, but i have never used a g2,so am hoping to get some strong input on this!

When I used 3 or 4 tones I would constantly get the high iron tone, went to 2 tones and it stopped. Hope this helps. HH
