Got up early today to to a tundra kind of hunt. As per usual, a good hearty breakfast was in order before heading out to a hill which got a lot of use this past weekend. The temperature at this time was a couple of degrees below freezing......

Here's my weapon of choice...a "Garrett Scorpion Gold Stinger," which was modified with a nice home made camo jacket built with a nice thick wool sock to give some decent insulation value. The machine is now referred to as my "Garrett Snowpion Cold Stinger. To keep the 3 x 9 volt batteries warm, I inserted one of those hot pacs just underneath the camo jacket, beside the rod as shown. Worked dang good too, as after about 5 hours, I was still getting 5 beeps for a battery check, which means that they are still fully charged.

Below is a pic of the finds from today. Nearly 20 bucks....an above average find for a snow hill. And this machine performed flawlessly and just as good in the snow as the dirt in the summer. If ever there was a metal detector designed to find Canadian coins, the Garrett Scorpion is about the best I have ever used. It just sounds off nicely on out pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, loonies and toonies. :)

WOW that's a lot of loot John i just cant imagine hunting in the snow it hit 40 deg C yesterday.

Sounds like a terrific hunt John. great totals.
Just wondering. Can you compare the audio response of the Gold Stinger to the GTI when the GTI is armed with the 5x10 Scorcher coil? It gives some excellent target information when combined with the visual information.
Mick Evans.

The scorpion has a flat mono tone, with audio modulation. The GTI soft signals are all amplified with 3 different tones. It's really comparing apples and oranges.

Does it have a heater??? A grip warmer would be nice. I've never used one of them- All metal machine?? TKS

John, those are some amazing finds, especially in the snow. I don't know how you do it in those conditions. You truly are dedicated and it looks like the weather sure as hell is'nt gonna stop you.I keep on running into this guy when detecting and he keeps on telling me to get a scorpion, now I know what he's talking about, Great Finds.
Happy Hunting whereever you detect.
Stan.

Nice haul John!

I always have been interested in the gold stinger but never had one. Maybe I will look for one to take with me on my vacation in the Philippines.

Thanks for sharing your pictures.

Eric.

From watching John's post, I know the best detector that he has, is his brain. He uses it to find those good hunting places. By the way John I have got the CX running real smooth now and it is much deeper than I thought. It is a very good relic machine. It is a little temperamental though. Bill In texas :garrett: :tesoro:

I work with a bunch of Philippine Nurses, and they are always telling me to go there. When I ask them If it is allowed, they don't know. A guy at work spent a couple of weeks there recently, and couldn't see any guys detecting on the beach he was at.

Great haul as usual John, that Scorpion seems to be quite a detector especially for our Canadian coins. Does it hit them better than the Ace? I am getting too old for any new detectors so I guess will stick with the Ace and its 3 coils.. HH Ken

It hits them hard....I hunt in true all metal mode. I set the disc to factory default. When I get a signal in all metal mode, I just switch over to disc mode. If the signal is still there, it is usually a coin. The Scorpion has an infinity to our nickels, dimes and quarters. It has a modulated audio, so you have to listen for those faint whispers in order to get the deepies, unlike some of the other Garrett's where the weak signals are amplified.

John,

I know of 4 guys detecting there and 2 are Filipino's. Detecting is easy and just ask permission. My wife is Filipina and we have a house in the south in Cagayan de Oro which is founded by the Spanish. For a foreigner it is easy to get acces to the authorities and ask permission. Next time I am there I plan to offer to hunt there, but in case of old finds with significance to hand them over to the city. Just to create goodwill.

Doug in Manila made some nice finds. Spanish colonial stuff.

HH, Eric

And also John, there is still a lot of gold in the ground. Bad thing is that many places are unsafe!
