I tried it today in my back yard for about an hour but there was to many mosquito's they were eating me alive. . I found a few pennys 1 dime and a quater my Whites XLT missed or it might be that the DD coil on the explorer is better. I never used the DD coil on the XLT.Can someone explain to me what Iron mask is. Does that mean all metal or how a coin sounds next to iron. Also what is a good setting I should use for iron mask. Thanks[

In my honest opinion? Iron mask just masks out iron....and the only true iron not wanted by anyone is a iron nail!....The rest are Relics....so why not just dig all except a true iron nail....which is high left upper corner. Canadian coins will hit in iron side so won't bobbie pins, so won't nickels at the beach that are deep...amungst other things....when the item is deep it will drag good, to iron side anyways and your iron mask will mask a good item cause there is alot of iron minerals in the ground.....so why not just dig it all in wide open all metal 0n smart screen....when in a junky fairground, use a custom disc. program you make yourself by using learn and save it....just so many variables with this detector it will be the cats meow if you know how to use it.

Iron mask is essentially the same as the old discrimination knob. The farther to the right, the more items you discriminate. All metal is the lack of any discrimination. That means iron mask is all the way to the left (clear screen) or off and no other blacked out areas at all on the smartfind screen. I run all metal as much as possible. If I have a lot of iron present and get 2 to 4 iron signals per sweep, I will turn on the iron mask one click (-31). That eliminates enough of the iron signals to keep me sane and find some good targets. Starting out you may not be able to run in all metal until you teach your brain what to listen for. Give it a little time before you try.

I not going to mess with the settings for a while until i know the tones and where the position of the cross hair. I read the manual and part of the Andy Sabisch book on the Explorer but I just did not understand Iron mask.

Did you know that Minelab is coming out with new detector called E-TRAC in 3-4 days?

It's basically SE but with many added features and some enhancements. I don't know how you stand financially but if I was you I would return the one you have and get the new one.

Can be found here

Set your sounds to ferrous, this way iron will have a low sound and more conductive targets will be a higher pitch. Use the digital, it will help you in target recognition by comparing the conductive and ferrous number to what comes out of the ground. For instance when you see a 03 28 on the screen you can say " I'll bet that is a dime". The biggest thing for you to be aware of is you have to swing that EXTREMELY slow, much different than how you swung the XLT. I would dig everything for a few days just to get used to what the machine is telling you.

Good Luck!
