First real gold / silver ring with the GT

JimmyCT

Well-known member
I never thought the day would come.... finally.....my first real gold / silver ring found with the Sov GT in the middle of the woods at one of my local parks.

First I hit a field near the woods for about 2 hours and found a 1914 penny and a nut in the same hole. The signal was a difficult one as the penny only responded in one direction and the meter was going bonkers (jumping up and down in the 170's to near 180 ) Once I pulled out the little nut you see pictured, then the penny came up nice and clear. That was with the 10" tornado coil so I was very pleased at the seperation in this iron dump hole lol. Then for the last half hour or so, I walked over into the woods and just started swinging away between the brush and trees. The wheats were right on the surface in the middle of the woods. I then came into a section that was littered with tons of pulltabs and bottlecaps. My ears still hurt lol but in the midst of all the signals bonging in my ears, I heard the sweet savor of a high tone. I pushed the leaves and brush out of the way and dug about an inch. There in my hand was a ring  On the inside it is stamped: 1/20 gold filled and Sterling espo. What a great start to my weekend!

Anyone know the approx age of this ring?

Thanks for looking and HH - Jim

Jim, that looks old by the way they ID'd it. Maybe I'm wrong but now they put GF, HGE or something similar in the band to signify heavy gold plate or gold filled.
Nice ring, my first gold ring was a 1-2 karat diamond engagement ring when i dug it.. but just bling when I got it home and cleaned it and saw HGE. I figure the diamond is zircon.
I found another one similar the following year at the same spot...go figure?
Ran

Thanks Ran! Well, I have some other places I want to hit since I am off the weekend. But this place where I found the ring is my backup park. (5 minutes from my house and the place I hit after work when I only have an hour or two.) HH - Jim

Jim it only gets better , I have found some of the best finds can be close to home . what an amaze

Jim gold filled is this (It is a layer of 10Kt or better gold mechanically bonded under heat & pressure to one or more surfaces of supporting base metal, then rolled or drawn to a given thickness. In the jewelry industry the quantity of gold must be at least 1/20th by weight of the total product.

Nice find - like the pennies too - I found a 1927 Wheatie the other day. It's beat to heck, but I'm still trying to clean it using electrolysis; slow going, but at least you can see Lincoln's head now. And, your first ring is your first ring - I haven't found one yet, but it will happen, just like it did you. Congrats!

Thanks Tin,
this is my first ring with the GT. Have you tried lemon juice? The name escapes me but there was someone here on this forum that recommended I use lemon juice. It works wonders and if not too heavily corroded the coin will clean up in minutes.(after it soaks for a little bit, I use a soft bristle toothbrush to loosen the crud) Best of luck in finding your first ring! HH - Jim
I want to say - electrolysis is fun but be careful, left too long this method will pit the coin. Just ask me lol

ESPO and ESPO-FLEX are the marks of Esposito Jewelry, Inc.
A costume jewelry company located in Providence, Rhode Island, USA.
These marks were first used in 1951.

Its strange that theres no Karat mark on it.

I also have a gold filled sterling espo ring. Im guessing that it is solid sterling with gold plate but there is a little corrosion on mine. Dont know if its a sterling core or not.

Thanks for the info Gunnar.

Thanks for the information on the company.
Yes I was wondering that myself why there is no Karat mark on it.
