First Ring

Got out to my kids elementary school for a couple hours today with my G2 (thank you Bart). It is about as old as the local parks but I find it a lot less trashy. I dug more than a dozen memorial cents, clad dime, quarter, and a few nickels. One of the nickels, with a magnifying glass(and my sons 10 year old eyes)appears to be a 1938, making it my oldest coin yet. With the gain at 100 and GB at 80, I almost did'nt dig the ring since it came up at 77 and I was tired of digging penny's. It was 4" deep and I think it's gold plated since the band is brown at the bottom. And you can see that it's flaking on the inside. I believe the opal is real but not sure about the diamonds on either side, either way I was very excited.

nice work...

to be a very good detector for you, and one that will provide ample desired targets. Naturally, the sites we select will be a determining factor, but so will our decisions to recover targets that don't give a rock-solid 'coin-type' VDI.

Know that Indian Head cents generally read similar to the modern Zinc cent, and sometimes they can read a little higher, but also a bit lower. The main cause is just a difference in the quality of the copper processing, plus age, wear-and-tear, and position in the ground as well as ground mineral make-up.

I find a lot of ugly, as well as attractive costume rings, but I take them all in stride because I know silver and gold rings will also come my way. I presume you're using the stock 11" DD coil, and it can work fine as long as you're hunting in more open areas. Be prepared for trashier sites, too, by investing in the 5" DD coil (if you haven't already).

Enjoy your searches, and with site selection and time afield, you'll easily find coins that are older than 1938. Perhaps the next older coin will be made of silver? You never know!

Happy Hunting and enjoy the G2,

Monte

The G2 and Gold Bug Series are awesome machines. Some people claim I talk about how great they are but the facts speak for themselves!!! You guys posting finds like this are the proof! Thanks for posting.

Nice ring and keep digging you will see some old coins real soon.

77 is the low end of the copper range. Have found 24 rings since I got my GBSE in August and several have come in from 77 to 83. All are plated copper. When it hits 83 up its silver. That ring should fuel the fever. Luv to find the Buffalos. Cant say enough good things about the GBSE.
