First short hunt

I went out today between the rain and while it was still in the 40s for around and hour and a half. The location was a spot
that I have hunted over and over with a couple other detectors and was able to pull some silver out of ever now and then.
All I can say is I am gonna have to calm this detector down a bit.. I dug a bunch of pull tabs and was able to pick a clad
quarter and a sinker out! The pull tabs were just beep beep beep beep beep and on and on and on. it was just way to
much noise to pick through. I really don't know enough about it yet to make a program. Just have to figure it out
Any advice from some of you guys that have been using the Deus for a while?

I have only had mine for 2 months. I entered the HOT program that Gary provided on youtube and have never changed. You have to be willing to listen to everything and just pull the tones you want. I mainly coin hunt and grab a piece of Jewelry now and then. If you have ever used a Minelab Explorer the full tones are easy to learn. You didn't say what type of hunting you do so it's hard to recommend a program. I would tell you to watch as many youtube videos as you can. I know several locals that have given up on the Deus because they don't want to listen to the detector. They just want a yes or no beep. You can hunt this way if you want but that's not what this detector is all about.

Seems like most of the guys I see posting are relic hunters but the Deus is the best all around detector I have every had. I am in Texas where the Silver hunting takes some work. I mainly hunt lots where old houses have been torn down to build new modern houses. If the site is way to trashy for the 9 inch Deus coil I use my Minelab X-terra with a 5 inch HF coil. The two detectors make a great pair.

Like I said watch the youtube videos and watch them again. That is the best advice I can give.

Here are my finds for the last 2 months. I don't know how good you can see it but I just found a WWII button. After I get all the high tones from a site I then dig everything until I get tired and move on.

Good Luck.

Hey there M.L. Hinds,
Calabash gave you some great advice. Get Andy's BOOK, and watch Gary's vids.
Also watch Calabash's vids as he is at 1 with this machine and darn knowledgeable
with the Almighty Deus. I wish I knew half of what he knows about the Deus.
There are many on this Deus Forum that are very, very Proficient with the Deus.
Go back in time on this forum and you will find some great info. and finds made
along with some great hunters using the Deus along with their willingness to
help out us guys wanting to learn this Great machine!!! Hang in there, in a short
time things will start Clicking. Wish you the best...

There are dozens of hours of Youtube videos and hundreds of post on this and another forum that will provide a wealth of information. There is a learning curve with the Deus that is steeper than some other detectors. The wealth of adjust-ability does make keeping it a simple turn on and go detector more difficult.

The more you read and watch the more you will understand. You need to have a pretty good understanding of the relationships and interactions of the settings to get very far with making or adjusting the programs. Also there is a good book by Andy Sabisch that many used to gain an understanding of the basics; it may be a little dated but still a good primer.

CT Todd's program is a pretty good place to start for many.

Keep it simple to begin with; find and stay with one set of tone setting until you get more comfortable.

I have had mine for almost four years and still am learning!

M.L. Hinds,

I sent you a private message. If you want the Deus book by Andy don't buy it. I will send you mine if you pay the postage. At this point it is really outdated but you are welcome to it. Just send me a PM.

You time will be better served watching all the videos on the XP site. These are the ones Gary produced. The watch as many of Calabash as you can. If you do any coin hunting watch his demo using the sifter program. That will open your eyes to what the Deus can do if you are willing to listen to all the tones.

HH,

Harold

I would ...

Right out of the box - spend some time in the field - get a feel for the machine, get use to it's tones, how it responds to targets, etc.
For me, once I spent some time actually using my Deus it was much easier for me to relate to what Andy's book and Gary's video's were trying to tell me !

A note for the future ...
Go back to your old sites and hunt them again !
Once I got more familiar with my Deus I loaded Gary's "Sifter Program" - this program is killer at finding good targets in iron / junk metal infested areas !
I went back to a few dozen sites that I though I had "hunted out" with my E-Trac ( with a 6" coil) - I made some real nice finds that I missed before at over 75% of these sites !

Good Luck with your new Deus !

I often wonder if we give to much credit to new machines, coils, programs and settings when we return to an hunted site and make some new finds.

Ground conditions, swing speed, swing direction, ground coverage and alertness are different each time we hit a place again. How often do we take the time to try our old settings to see if they would get a hit on the newly discovered target? How often to we take the time to try several different programs and settings on multiple targets on a given day?

I also have liked to believe that a new coil, machine or program are the reason for a find. Sometimes this may be true; some times it wishful thinking and justification.

Testing in my coin garden has often shown that the "program of the month" is really no better than several others for the vast majority of the targets I have buried.
Of course for the most part site conditions don't change much in my garden except for ground moisture.

Some days some programs and setting are just perfect for a given target at a given site.

But hope springs eternal for us and any wishful or valid thinking that gets us out increase our odds.

Oh and by the way; I just bought a new elliptical because I am sure it will find things I missed with a ML 705 with three coils, a CTX with three coils and a Deus!
