First Silver FTY is a Barber Dime

Well-known member
Late bloomer this year. Not really, yesterday was only my third time out. My last four hunts were in the same hard hit area of an old park. I hit it in Jan. before the freeze and snow came. All I got was a toasty V nickel, a few wheats and a couple clad coins. Then just last Monday I made it back out. This time I ran into a clad spill of around 1.60 or so. Total clad for the day was 2.33 which is alot for this place. The coolest and deepest (10+) find of the day was an old buckle. Unfortunately I dinged it with my shovel. Then late in the day I headed over to the "path", I've posted about this in previous posts. Its maybe 20-30 ft. long by maybe 4 or 5 ft. wide. It cuts through a row of thickets from a set of woods to a field. And yet again it gave up two old V nickels on the apron to the field side. Unbelievable, Yesterday, although no coins from the path a 50 gave up a nice little sterling ID bracelet.

I knew it was going to be a good day when swinging across a field to get to the area I got a quick smooth one way chirp. Not a repeatable, just a chirp. But the tone had my attention. Played with it, could not get it to repeat. Dug it, swung on it, nothing, started flipping dirt in the hole and thats when I saw a flash of silver. Heck yeah ! First target/coin of the day is also my first silver FTY. A nice looking 1907 Barber dime. There was also a rusty nail I pulled when rechecking. This field hasn't given up a coin in 5 years. Now my second coin of the day was also silver, a 42 Merc. Laying in with it was 3 wheats for a nice little coin spill. The signal was a bit jumpy and there was a bit of iron in the hole. I'm thinking what a start. Ironically this spill was real close to the spot where I dug my first silver, a Merc for 2025. But this year, thanks to the snow I was hunting in matted down high grass that made swinging on it possible. Not far away I picked up another wheat. On the day, 8 in total. I can't remember the last time I dug that many on one hunt. A 77 signal was another Merc and not long after I picked up another one. As I said earlier towards the end of the day I moved on to the path where I dug the bracelet. What a day, and for me a long hunt, over six and a half hours. Still in recovery mode today. Thanks for looking in. Mark The last pic is from a late Dec. hunt from the same area. PICS BELOW. Not sure why they posted like that.

Very nice work on the digs... Weather is making a turn around here in ohio this coming week. Hope to try my luck then.
Mark ( ohio )

You had a phenomenal day! Glad you investigated that quick smooth one way chirp!! If those thickets are ever cut down, that would be the first place I’d check out.
2 quick stories: I noticed at a local park the maintenance dept cut back these thorny bushes near the back entrance. I headed right over to the area and found three Mercury dimes.
In the second story, I was hunting an old foot path, and started pushing my 5x8” coil ( running the AT pro) in between the thickets that bordered the path. Sure enough I found a silver quarter and two Mercury dimes.
I hope to see more from you at this old park.

Great finds there Mark and a fabulous start for the year too!👍👍
Thank you fwcrawford. That hunt sure got me wound up. Good luck.
That’s a good outing for sure!
Big Tony thanks, any multiple silver hunt makes for a great day. Good luck to you.
Awesome.
Great job getting it done.
OC Thanks, you gotta love the Manticore. Its a silver gitter for sure. Good luck.
Great start to the year Mark, hopefully a sign of things to come! Allot of work but I bet you drove home with a smile on your face! JJ
Smile, more like a sh!t eating grin. Ha ha. Days like that don't happen too often. Good luck to you.

Jimmy, appreciate the kind words, thanks. Believe it or not last year, same area I had a five silver hunt with a dime trifecta to include a seated. You got lucky when you noticed that clearing. Three Mercs make for a heck of a day. I had the same thing happen last year. Same park but a completely different area. I was just heading back to an old honey hole with the Manticore/9in. to see if I missed anything with the 800. It is a small set of woods that somehow got missed by the Md'rs of old. Lotta downed trees and stands of small saplings. To my surprise parks dept. had cleared everything but the standing timber. To make way for the frizzbe park.I really cleaned up. Had to duck behind trees when they were throwing but it was worth it. I'm thinkin at least 10 more silvers came from that area last year along with wheats Buff's Vs and tokens. Not to mention I looted that area in the past. When I say honey hole it really was.
Back to the path, thickets. I do squeeze in there from time to time but swinging is limited. I would love to see them gone. Occasionally I might snap a branch or two off to get an extra swing in. lol
All but a couple of my 40 outings last year were at the 2 old parks, the majority at this one and all with the Manticore w/9in. The ground around here was just too dry to ask people to dig in their yards. This park gave up over 30 silvers plus a couple Ihps, and a bunch of other keepers. If I can do half as good this year I'll be quite happy. I'm including a pic of my pile of silver from last year, again all but one, the burnt Merc, was from the parks. The coins on the right are from the coinstar. Good luck to you sir. Did you get pounded with that last snow storm ?

Unfortunately no. I've only dug one 1916 and that was worn so thin you could barely see the year, forget about a mint mark. I did get a beautiful 1923 w/ full split bands in an old coin spill (same park ) a few years back. The dateless SLQ in the pic is a Type 1.
