First Silver of the Year

We were hunting a yard with a 1900's home on it. Here's my finds from yesterday. My first silver coin for 2010 was the 1941 Merc and then came the 1943-S silver nickel. I was so tickled when I looked at the nickel and saw it was a silver war nickle. I love to find old nickels and a silver one is a little boost. Even though the thimble is smashed, it's a favorite also. The rest of the finds were all great digging. Those stinking square things were a pain in the X@@ because they were deep and sounded just like a wheat cent. I was using my 9.5 stock coil since the ground wasn't trashy. I dug some junk, but it's in the wastebasket, but had to show you those square things. If you know what the are, please tell me. I was digging anything deep. Thanks for looking and HH, Nancy

Nice finds Nancy ! I love the Merc. I like to find fishing weights too cuz I can use em fishing and the old ones I put in a collection. What's that ring in the picture ? It looks like a heavy band of some sort. Nice haul, I'm stoked for you after this winter especially. Good job !

Not absolute sure but I think your square gizzies are an alternative type of roofing nail .. maybe for use on roll (tarpaper) underlayment for shingles,

Congrats on the silver & I hope you find many more this year. Carma must have been in the air yesterday as I could not find anything old but a few wheat's, while I was driving around I was headed for a tot lot but saw it was busy. Well just up the road was a area covered with sage brush & I remembered that it use to be an old road going to a farm. I stopped & wandered through the area & in five minutes got a good signal, pulled out a 1897 barber quarter. Hunted for another hour & nothing, but I did break the spell.

Sharp Hunting Nancy!! Your success just reminds me I need to start knocking on doors for permission tohunt these older homes and properties. Driving by too many oppurtunities for nice finds like this.

Are the heads of those square things lead Nancy?
I get good sounds on the ole lead-heads of the lead-head nails, sounds like a coin and most are deep down because of the weight of them, so you got to dig just incase.

Hi Nancy.
I agree with silvernail on those square things.They look to be some sort of flat sheathing nails. If they are copper they nay have been for securing copper roof / eave flashing. If they are galv. steel they may have been for holding down roofing / siding felt or galvanized flashing. My best guess.

Nice first silver and even better that you got the war nickel . Two silvers in one day is a great hunt congrats . Think it rubbed off on me as I got my first silver mercury dime yesterday and my second silver for this year first was a ring a couple weeks ago . congrats nice job .
