When I bought my detector, I learned everything on my own for the most part. After about 6 months or so, then I started to hunt with a guy I met and we still hunt together on occasion. Actually 2 guys. Randy and Dale. But the first Month and a half I just went to a Park and started to dig everything to get a feel of what was what and this really opened up my eyes on the sounds and what the readings were. After that I have been doing great with it. I must be approaching 1,000 Silver Coins since fall of 2001 but you know what, I just wish I would have gotten the Explorer XS when they first hit the market. Lost out on quite a bit of Old Stuff the first year. But I am glad of what I have found so far and hope to keep Raping the Ground (as Rick(ND) calls it) for many years to come. No way I could dig all the signals in the parks around here...It would look like they had been plowed...Speaking of pics...I need to try & set up something to snap photos with, I've got a Sony Cybershot & should be able to figure out how to take better photos with it... Sounds like something I need to do the next time it rains...TT

could and does weaken it. If it were subject to a higher than normal level of stress, I guess this would be the point that would bend or give, first off.

BUT

You could use that drilling bit you have shown, so long as you have control of the cut and don't cut out too much of the "meat", that would be best left on that shaft.

Having cut holes 3 explorer upper shafts similar to this by myself so far and I did so using a 3mm drill bit to simply drill a series of holes around the drawn outline of the intended cut and then cleaned up with a small file,I can say for sure, that so far, the shafts have held up just fine. No problems.

A few things to consider.

The Explorer upper shaft seems to be made of a higher than usual quality aluminum. It's seems to be hardened but is fairly easy to file down.

Keep the hole as central to the width of the shaft as possible

Keep the size of this and any other hole to a minimum.

That threaded knurled ring on the coil connector and the connector is all that needs to be fit through this hole. As in the picture shown, you need to protect the rubbing the cable on the edge of aluminium from the resulting hole.I acually have npt bothered as I finished of the holes to ensure blunted edging.

Cutting the hole to suit this shape to pass through works well but not entirely necessary. The hole shape as in the picture is just as strong and effective. It's been kept to a width and length minimum(size overall).

I suggest that one tries out a design of such a hole to suit on a piece of scrap material(even an aluminium beer can)to get an idea of what will suit before tackling it on the Explorers search shaft.

I think that would be difficult to fish the connector through that hole with the slots present. As long as the four radius's are intact on the shaft, the strength should be fine. Only cut the minimum width required. I am going to do this mod once I get my new upper shaft and probe.

I've got some black paint for my beige upper shaft too...

Trouble is we in Australia are a long way from the Sunray works if we er "muck" up the upper shaft...

Would it be hard to re-fit the X-1 box to another upper shaft???

That little nylon cable entry fitting would be my biggest worry...
