My other "finds" for today are nothing to "write home about", but I got lots of fresh air and exercise out there

Mag - Very neat old piece. I'll bet it's worth some bux - better check on ebay or such. Tom Mix died in a car crash about 45 miles from me. He was barreling along the desert highway and smashed up. They have a monument to him there. steve in so az

That is a real keeper! You got a good one there! I have seen some Tom Mix stuff and it is very collectable! WTG!!!! :)

Welcome to the gang! What part of NC are you from?

God bless!

...I've found several "good luck" pieces that kids used to get at our county fair but nothing as cool as that!!

Magyar the "pocket piece" is actually a Character Premium most likely from the 1940's! Tom Mix was really popular back then, he was featued in comics, radio shows and in the movies! This premium was either a give-away or purchased for a very small amount. It may have been advertised from the radio show or from the back of a cereal box. Not sure of the value but there are shows for this type of collectable!.....................HH...........Joe

That Tom Mix piece is probably worth a few bucks. It's at least 60-70 years old. Tom Mix was killed in a car crash in Arizona in the forties.

Only 'pocket piece' I found was an Ike (Eisenhower) Dollar someone had in hand when a sudden rainstorm hit. Everyone scattered. I didn't pay much attention to what the guy looked like at the time he was playing with the Ike. But he dropped in his haste to stay dry. I found it and after the rain stopped I stayed in the area to see if he would return for it. He never did. Guess you can call that an eye ball find.

Other pocket pieces that are gaining popularity are called 'Commanders Coins' or 'Challenge Coins'. These are tokens the U.S. military receive from their Commanders when assigned to a new unit - a sign of 'belonging'. Other places also issue tokens or coins and these are known as Challenge Coins. Police, fire, and many other places have adopted them as showing their unity. Here is where the challenge comes in...in the military (and the one I have for Air Force Security Police) the challenge is made in a bar...everyone is to show their challenge coin...the one without his coin on him pays for the rounds of drink for those with their coin. Usually it isn't a challenge for everyone in the bar - just those from that particular group.

These are also 'collectibles'. I know a individual working for the Corrections Department of Michigan who has a nice collection in his office....including one from the FBI. Even the Presidential staff have these coins too.

Do a check on eBay for Commanders Coins and/or Challenge Coins and you will be amazed at the wide selection, color, design, etc., of these items. I have found one Challenge Coin in a kid's playgroung....it was an Education Challenge coin. The coin had a challenge on it for the child that got it to do his/her best. I'll post it if I can find it. Very nice.

Thanks for all the interesting , valuable information you have all given to me on this find.

I have other things like that , but I don't know much about them..they are just in the bottom of a box....with that Pirate medallion....I'll have to recheck them.

God Bless !

I had forgotten about it. His Mom's name was Etta Morgan. I gave him a Morgan Dollar to replace a pocket piece he used to carry. He loved the beautiful Morgan Dollar. I am sure he had shown it to his brothers whenever he visited them. After he passes away, I don't think we ever found that coin....nor any of the coins and other items I had found in England...all came up missing from his person and his house.
