First time out with EX II..... (long)

Been detecting for almost 30 years and besides a Nautilus, the EX II was the only machine I hadn't tried. Maybe a little intimidated but anyway, took the
plunge. Impressions: Right off the bat, the first thing you notice is that this thing is heavy. Other than that, everything went fine. I really had the wrong idea of this machine, not nearly as hard to understand as I thought, still dealing with the simple things but I think after I get used to them, I can move on. Anyway, with the sensitivity in manual, ran up to about 27 and she settled down. Hunting CW relics in an area that has been pounded, actually didn't know how well I would do but got
a piece of lead case shot at between 12-13 inches.
That impressed me(I'm hard to impress)and I will not
spew out a lot of hype. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. Got a grommett at about 7-8 inches. Went in then cause the wind was blowing and it was
cold. The case shot was the deepest target of that size that I have dug with a stock coil.(10") I like the sounds the EX II makes but swinging it slow takes
some getting use to, like the Elite I had. Any suggestions on handling the weight would be appreciated and I'd like to hear from some that are using the 8" coil. I'd say it's a killer on coins.
Best to all, Richardntn

Do go slow and simplicity is the key..We are all different individuals and do read some of the posts with a grain of salt as some just make an easy detector hard( heck even in the quickstart mode with the sens. bumped up into the 20's found silver coins up to 10 inches) I have to admire some who seem to tweak every facet as I am sure many help, however gets some time with the unit until you experiment..
As far as weight is concerned do set the front pole and armrest to fit your body and make your swings slowly just brushing the ground which does help. In reallity the unit is nose heavy and some elect for a 8 inch coil and feedback is mixed. I myself prefer the stock 10 inch coil, but only hunt 3 hr or so hunts and being a senior citizen would not make an 8 hr. day..Doc's swingy thing is a thought as it works for many and they do make a hipmount but its clumsy at best. In reallity you have super guts and a fine machine and if you can handle the weight am sure it will serve you well..In addendum find a club member or local detectorist who is experienced with an Explorer and it will cut down the learning period..
Do read the manual and try to imagine what every facet does and also Sabisches book is a good teaching tool also. Good luck with your new toy and any questions fire away as we have a lot of good people to help you...Gosh I hope you are not from my area as our area is hard hit as it is and worked out may indeed be true after an Explorer or two goes over an area.

it's real deep and stable.
for trashy spots though, i like the joey coil. it's light, deep, smooth swinging-solid bottom cover design, has coverage and separation, elliptical 5x10.

All great advice and concur. That monster gets even heavier with the addition of the X-1 probe and a W.O.T. coil. Being a senior citizen also (AARP qualified)I developed a severe case of tennis elbow from long hour swinging. I purchased and used the "swingy thingy" and it sure did help. It's just a little awkward for the first hour or so, but sure relieves the stress on the arm. The Explorer is the best machine I have used. Two things I have noticed the machine doesn't like is air and fast swings. I don't believe it recovers as fast as some machines. The closer I have the coil to the ground and the more patience I exercise swinging "very" slow, the more nice coins I find after I cherry hunt an area.
P.S. Has anyone told you yet that the X-1 inline probe is almost a must?

Welcome to the club. I use the 8" coil almost all the time. I have dug coins at 10"-11" when useing it. Also
the JOEY is good in tight and trashy places.
And get the X-1 PROBE <img src="/metal/html/super.gif" border=0 width=26 height=28 alt=":super">

I switched to the sunray x 12 which is lighter and i think more sensitive. I have an 8" on order which should be lighter yet.
I run iron mask at - 14 / ferrous
check mike moutrie settings.

I find if you use (fast)you can swing a little faster, however being a slow swinger by nature just fine for me...As far as an inline probe and WOT coil they work well for many. I personally think the WOT does cover a lot of extra ground but the added weight is a problem which is also a problem with the inline probe so I use the stock coil and a small pinpoint probe that fits in my pocket. Again we are all individuals and I feel with practice an Explorer can be pinpointed quite well with the stock coil and only use the pinpointer for deep holes or under roots etc. Heck I even pinpoint in Disc. mode so whatever works..Indeed the Explorer has some mighty good acc's that work well for many, but I try to go as light as I can and the above acc's are not for me.
Indeed always give and takeaways when dealing with acc's...or for that matter detector settings..So indeed outfit yourself to your spec's and go get em as soon as this darn snow melts. In addendum do practice pinpointing as I remember my first time out would have had trouble pinointing a buried 57 chevy...

Dan, have you tried the Swingy Thingy. Boy that thingy is saving my 64 old arm and shoulder. I was really starting to cry over what I was going to do about the problem and then tried a Swingy Thingy. Very nice product!
